I live in Hawaii and kill an elk on the mainland every year. Mostly in Utah but I killed a nice bull last year in New Mexico and this year I got a big one in Wyoming. I always take the meat to a processor and pay a rush to have the meat cut and frozen before I fly home. I then buy 3 $20 coolers from Walmart and check the frozen meat in the coolers.

I have status with my airline so it doesn’t cost me anything to check the extra coolers but even if I didn’t have status, I would still check it.

This year I actually shipped a cooler to my brother in Texas from Wyoming and it cost me $78 for fedex. He got it two days later and the meat was still frozen.

I fly out via SW airlines every year. I've brought meat back the last three years. To me, the biggest issue is finding somewhere decent to process and freeze in time. The meat must be frozen. This year I brought my entire elk back minus the front shoulder (I donated it). I had both loins and tenderloins in my carry-on (polar bear cooler). The rest ~150lbs I checked. I'll put together a video pretty soon.

I use UPS with dry ice. Big bucks $$$
Do NOT go over 70lbs. It'll sit there until 2 union boys are available to pick it up. Even with an overnight label on it, it won't move until 2 union men can lift together. and in some of these rural areas, they have limited staff.
