Hello everyone. Have a question on shipping a Mule Deer rack home from a hunting trip. I have a hunt coming up and have to fly this year. Usually when I'm successful and flying, I cut the skull cap and crack it so the antlers nest together. The last deer I got I drove and was able to leave the skull and antlers intact. I would like to do the same this year. I know about using hose to protect the points and a piece of wood to support them. Does anyone have a system they use to ship these that is safe?

Im assuming your boiling and completely drying the skull. I buy two big boxes the same size, usually moving boxes from home depot. Use one box as the outer box. The second box i make a couple cuts to make it 5% smaller so it goes inside the outer box. Wrap the nose and tooth area with buble wrap. Then I put the skull in the boxes, add packing peanuts, and overfill a little with packing peanuts. Then squish the box closed and use an entire roll of tape to seal the box. The box usually costs about $250 to ship.

I shot the mulie in my avatar in Mexico. Boiled the skull and froze the cape and put both in a large storage container with padding, taped it up and checked it as an oversize on the plane back to Oklahoma.

I hunt in MO every year and I usually put my whitetail racks in my check bags. I had to ship one about 6 or 7 years ago and UPS charged me $75. They boxed it up and bubble wrapped the crap out of it and everything. I thought that was reasonable.

Just make sure to comply with all the CWD regulations. Not sure how you would get caught, but it is good practice not to transport brain and nervous system material across state lines.
