So being fairly new to the world of backpacking, I haven't quite nailed down my shelter setup. I originally bought a eureka timberline because it was what I could afford, but at 6lb it's a little cumbersome for solo backpacking.

Last season I rolled with this setup. The rain flye from the timberline, a section of painter's plastic, and a trekking pole. It was doable but unstable in high wind and I'm glad I didn't weather any storms under there.

I want to stay light and versatile with my shelter but I also want to feel a little more protected from the elements.

So does anyone use just a tarp with a "bathtub"? I've been looking at the satellite tarp from slumberjack as an economical option and have been considering adding the bathtub floor. Or would I basically be back to the price/weight of a tent?

I've never slept in a bivvy sack but I think I would find it claustrophobic.

My end goal is to acquire a sawtooth, but for now I just need to stay dry and have a decent spot to sleep.

Any input is appreciated.

I'm extremely claustrophobic and I have no problem in a bivy. It's less restrictive than a sleeping bag. If you're worried about it, get a wide version. I switched to floorless a couple years ago and prefer it.

I'll second the BT-2 for lightweight, minimalistic, but very stormworthy. 25 oz canopy, affordable. Seek Outside also makes a dedicated nest for it, as an option.

Also look at Seek Outside's Li'l Bugout shelter. It's very modular. You can deploy it as a open shelter, or use the vestibule to button it up in foul weather. Also very light, around 25 oz canopy with vestibule, I believe.

The Seek Outside Cimarron is something you should check out too. A little bigger, but not much more weight.

Ive got a BT-2 and have been very happy with it for one or two + gear. Did a backpack fishing trip with two guys and two dogs, a little tight but still doable.

Thanks, guys.

I really like the look of the cimmaron and the ability to use a stove with it. How does it compare to the go-lite Shangri La? (Aside from go-lite being out of production.)
