I am looking to get a completely new pack system this year. I was wondering what y’alls thoughts are on having a shelf pack or not such as a Kuiu without or a Eberlestock that has one. I am mainly concerned about hauling meat out if I am lucky enough. I apologize if this is a common question, I am new to backpack hunting.

Go with the Kuiu w/o a shelft over an Eberlestock with a shelf. There is a mixed opinion on the load shelf. Some like it, some don't. I have never used mine (Kifaru Reckoning), and unsure of if I would try it - but I guess I have the option; and I like having options.

But definitely out of those two bags I think you should go with a Kuiu. An even better recommendation would be to look at the Minimalist setup from Stone Glacier. Run that for a year and then purchase a bag and give the shelf a try. You get a way better frame from the get go and can upgrade later if you see fit. You might just like the minimalist set up on it's one and find that you don't need another pack.

You could do something similiar with a Kifaru frame/cargo panel.

Thank you for your input. I called kuiu yesterday and talked to their customer service and they were very helpful. I think I’m going to go with an internal frame as you mentioned. I think I’m in between the Kuiu and now the Stone Glacier after looking into that pack.

If you are considering both Kuiu and Stone Glacier then I would recommend the SG. The SG handles weight much better and has load sling included allowing meat to be packed between the frame and bag. Kuiu has the option to buy a load sling separate, but in my experience with a Kuiu pack is the load shifts more than I care for. Either way utilize a load sling and there is no need for an actual shelf. I should add that eberlestock packs are terribly uncomfortable with even moderate loads, just an overall bad design IMO. I've owned all 3 over the years upgrading when I could afford to do so. The SG is the only one I use these days.

I would go Kuiu myself. I have packed meat dozens of times in between the gram and bag and have zero issues. I put it in their small game bags and then one large one, strap it down and go. Once I get back to camp I just unpack the small bags and hang them by the handles. It has worked out well for me over the years.

Thank y’all for your input. I really appreciate it. I did some research into the load sling and it does look more comfortable than a shelf. Thank you again.
