Sheep & Knee Replacements

Just back from 15 days in the BC bush. Lots or horse riding, leading, and mountain climbing. No legal Stone’s Sheep seen, but I’m not out of the fight yet. Climbed more mountains on this hunt than any other I’ve done.

Question for anyone that has done a knee replacement. Are you still able to hike hard and hunt sheep after a recovery and rehab period? I need both knees replaced. One gives me a lot of trouble. To get through my hunt I took over-the-counter pain meds and anti-inflammatory meds, and often wore a pain patch. I was good climbing and managed descending but I fear the surgery is near.

Would like to hear if others have been able to get back out their, aggressively, after sheep, post replacement surgeries.

I had a 62 year old buddy go on a drop off moose hunt with me in 2022. He's a tall guy with both knees replaced. He had done very well with his recovery. Mobility and day to day was near normal.

However the uneven, boggy terrain really kicked his butt. He seemed very hesitant and unsure of his footing. The terrain was wet and tough going, I fell a time or two. I think in the back of his mind, he was worried about hurting himself.

He did okay overall but it definitely hindered his ability to "go" when needed.

Figure 3 months per knee and you may not be able to bend them as far as you did before surgery but they will work great, do your therapy, only thing i worry about is i asked DR. if you can get on your knees and he said some can and some can not but be careful because they shave the back of your knee cap, on x-ray it looks like a poker chip they glue on.

I had 1 knee done 9 months ago. It is a marathon not a sprint. I sent in for a mt goat tag for September. Glad I didn't draw. Don't think I could climb right now. Uneven surfaces and grades are the worst. They say 18 months to fully heal. The first 8 weeks I wondered if I made the right decision it sucked. Getting better all the time. And it is better know than before surgery. Good luck on your decision
