Shed Hunting Colorado

My family is planning a trip to Colorado this June. We are planning on renting a cabin for the week. I would like to take one full day and go hit some public land to try to find an elk shed. I'm from PA and have never been able to find one. So I'm only looking to find one and I'd be extremely happy, not out trying to collect them to sell or anything. I understand you have to get a permit to collect sheds there now?

Not sure where we're staying yet, but my plan is to just find some public land nearby and spend a whole day hiking as far as I can. Any suggestions/tips/advice would be greatly appreciated. But my biggest question is, is it worth it? Or will I be highly unlikely to find anything that time of year with that little of time to look?

Most years the first of June is the end of it, they all are sucked up by the green, but every year is different and you may still step on one. My dog finds a higher percentage the greener it gets cause its not visual for them. Last year they scrapped the permit idea but it will be back at some point, they would charge you for having sex outdoors but who has time to do that when there are horns to be found...

Your close enough to elk county in Pennsylvania. Have you went there to look for them. I’m not sure of the shed hunting rules in PA.

Yes I have a couple times. Never tried real hard though. I plan on it a little more seriously this year. But the amount of people that do it there is ridiculous. People follow the elk around and watch the antlers drop then run and get them. It's pretty crazy and I would have to be pretty lucky to find one. I'll still try though, just have to be in the right place at the right time. I was just kinda thinking it would be a fun way to spend a day in Colorado. If nothing else, it gives me an excuse to explore some back country (not that I need one anyway).

That's how it is in Colorado too. Most sheds will picked up by end of April. Getting out is always enjoyable and no one gets them all

Last year a shed season was implemented: May 1st - December 31st on public land west of I25.

It's a $75 fine per shed if caught, if my memory is correct.

I was in a store in Westcliffe this last summer, and they had sheds laying around with price tags. So I checked one out and laughed out loud. They wanted $176 for a single small 6x6 shed. SMH. If they can actually get those prices, it's worth taking the risk for only $75/ea.
