A little late getting this out, but am heading to Alaska tomorrow for a bear hunt. If it ends early due to success, we'll have some days to kill before return flight. Thought is to try and get in a bit of fishing so am wondering, where would be the best to do it. Been to Seward a couple times, but never fished, fished Ninilchik in July, and never fished Homer. Doesn't really matter if it's bottom fish, halibut or salmon. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

I’d check with with with Captain Steve’s Lodge in Ninilchik. Have fished with the Smith family for years. Just fished with his brother Chris for halibut in the Bay Area last Thursday. Lots of options for you. Have a great trip!

Thanks guys. I’ll check with them when (hopefully) we get back early.

Seward due to the lighter tides. Good halibut fishing this time of year. Go with profish-n-sea charters if you can get a spot. Fantastic outfit.

Lots of good charters in Seward that can get you out in Resurrection Bay.

Halibut are in shallow right now following hooligan and herring up the inlet. I would do deep creek or Ninilchik for halibut. A lot less of a run and, because your putting in at the fishing grounds.

I would fish out of Deep Creek/Ninlchik. So much that I actually have a trip booked next weekend out of Ninilchik. Ling isn't open and you're early for salmon. So you can fish halibut and rockfish (which I'd rather leave in the water since IMO they taste like sunken tires and are as exciting as reeling in a stick). To target Halibut, I like Cook Inlet for the cost, size of fish, and short runs. I fished with captain Steve's mentioned above a couple years ago and we did good. They seem to have competitive guides, which is always good. If you're ever around after July 1, I'd book with Captain Steve's and pray for good weather. They have landed a PILE of ling in the books but only get to fish them when the weather is perfect.

edit: any place you mentioned with a decent guide will produce halibut. I prefer an extra 2 hours of fishing over sacrificing that time for a boat ride and scenery (Seward and Homer). Sockeye on the upper Kenai opens June 11 if you're around!

Good luck on your hunt!
