Are mosquitoes ever an issue in early September in Colorado? Trying to decide if I need a bivy, or just a tarp. Obviously avoiding seeps and water is good, but didn't know if early September has them out in any number.

I live in Colorado. I moved here from Texas where I got absolutely rampaged by mosquitos my entire life. I haven’t been bitten since I moved here. If they were here, they would bite me. I’ve been camping all through the summers and most of the time my shelter of choice is a DST tarp. Mosquito risk gets even smaller with elevation and cool September nights. I cringe when I buy heartworm meds for my dog because I know they aren’t going to get it because there are few mosquitos, but I do it anyway.

Depends on the area. I went scouting last year and thought I was in BC. I’ve never been but so many times in my life. Like 100s of times. I didn’t bring bug spray. The only solution was to keep moving constantly. It ruined what should have been a great scouting trip. I have bug spray in my pack now, along with bug spray wipes, and an extra little bottle of bug spray in. Y pack. Never again!

I have. A thermacell that doesnt get enough use, although skeeters while hiking are hard to keep away without deep woods off. The good stuff with 40% deet only. Gonna die somehow

What he said^^^. I absolutely hate bug spray because it ruins gears and is unpleasant feeling greasy for days or weeks on end. I treat my hunting gear twice a year with permethrin. It works great and that's saying a lot when it works great in Alaska during spring and summer. Thermacells are also great but they don't work when you're walking or there is any sort of wind. Sometimes I also use a bug repellant sunscreen combo (not deet) that sawyer makes. Doesn't stink or leave you greasy and helps your neck and face not get burned or chewed up. I've learned these things the hard way when hunting caribou in the summer.

I cannot say enough good things regarding Premethrin (Amazon.com: Sawyer Products SP657 Premium Permethrin Clothing Insect Repellent Trigger Spray, 24-Ounce: Sawyer: Sports & Outdoors). You spray it on your clothes and allow to dry and then for weeks, you have little worries regarding any bugs. What makes Premethrin so effective is that it was developed for the US Military and used since the 1990's. Great stuff, get some, apply it per the instructions and then have no worries.
Can you put permethrin on silpoly?
