selway bitteroot wilderness spring bear

Anyone know how to get a Forest Service Travel Plan map for the southern half of the Nez Perce Clearwater Nat Forest? All I can download on their website is from about coolwater ridge and North. Doesn't show any maps that would cover the Selway or Elk City areas?? Called the several ranger districts, and they have seasonal workers on the phones who claim a travel plan doesn't exist?? That can't be right.

This spring is looking like nothing we've seen in prolly 20yrs... At this rate I doubt for one you'll get to 5000ft by july. Nothing wrong with a 6.5. load it up with a TTSX. hammer both front shoulders. STEEP and THICK

You thinking the snow will be around into July this year?

If you are familiar with Avenza maps, you can download a free Motor Vehicle Use Map(MVUM) of the area. Search Clearwater MVUM in the Avenza store.

curious how mosquitos are in the area at that time. if they are bad is there a brand of bug spray recommended. one that may not have much of a scent but is still effective.

just got back, one guy did in fact shoot a bear! we had to pack it out 14 miles though... terrain is way steeper in person than OnX. be prepared to shoot up to or past 500 yards. super thick and bushes are bigger than they appear when glassing. would advise going earlier in the season when snowline is lower. and vegetation is less thick. bears can be found at all elevations though. found some deer fawns in the grass. river was running too hard to fish. really neat place to hunt though! seen plenty of cow elk and doe's. trails were beat up by horses. seen about 6 rattlesnakes in our tenure. Nez Perce pass just opened up that week so idk how much earlier you can get without flying. goodluck to anyone still hunting! be back to unit 17 this fall for elk (yah i know elk hunting sucks in 17, buying another bear tag)

I was in there for a couple days as well
Quite a few people in there and not many bears
Packed up and headed to another area with more bears and way less people
The Selway is a cool area but not much huntable country in there and the deadfall is about as bad as it gets

Might of just been in different areas but i saw plenty of bear sign. was just tough to glass being that there is so much green and the vegetation is taller than the bears. where we were was not accessible a week prior to when we went due to the access road. if we flew in a month ago would of been perfect
