Seek Outside "The Canyon"

I use my 12-man mostly as a base camp for bird hunting. I like the roominess feeling of the straight wall shelters. This would fit easily in my truck along with all the dogs and gear. Previous wall tents we brought just took up too much room in the truck.

I think this is an interesting idea; a wall tent style with lightweight materials. I'll probably stick with my 12 man but like the idea nonetheless.

As I said in the other thread....I've been wanting something like this for a long time....and finally decided to build one- materials ordered.

I think its going to fit the bill for a lot of guys, light, compact...and the interior space just kills those tipis where you lose a lot of space around the perimeter. That and the horrible condensation is why I sold my SL5.

I looked for another thread about this. I didn't see one at the time I started this one. Sorry for duplicating!

This is definitely a cool shelter! Any ideas on what is is going to cost? My guess would be somewhere similar to a 12man tipi...

I'll be looking at reviews of this. I'm a big wall tent fan, as my father and grandfather are getting to old for the backpacking thing anymore but hauling around those canvas monsters when your the only young back sure gets to be a pain.

I think this should do really well for drop or horse camps.

They don't know yet but expect somewhere between an 8 and 12 man, closer to the 12 man cost. Two poles adds to the cost.

I'd guess the weight savings would be a big deal to folks with pack animals, especially the goat/llama packers.

We've got a 12x14 wall tent. Canvas 75 lbs, internal frame guessing 50 lbs, stakes probably 20 lbs, stove/pipe probably 40 lbs. That's about 185 lbs. I didn't consider the fly, or floor tarp.

I think another big selling point compared to a wall tent will be how small it packs up. I'm sure you could put it in the trunk of a small car, or in a jeep, no problem.

I still have an F250 with an 8-ft bed, so the wall tent is not a problem in that regard. Lots of folks driving smaller vehicles though.

Im guessing set up and break down times will be less than a traditional canvas wall tent as well. Im sure its not going to replace an outfitters tent that is set up for an entire season but for someone who packs in or for a weekend warrior it looks like a really interesting option.

I will stick with my golite SL-8 that weighs in at 6 pounds and is 9.5x18'. Was able to fit something like 18 people in it this spring during our packraft rondy while it was pouring outside and have the woodstove cranking. But I like the design and concept of this. There are times when I need a 4 season shelter to buck the wind sure. But the majority of the time if I am realistic about my useage this style shelter will work for 90-95% of the time.

I wonder how it holds up to the wind compared to a Tipi? It says "not as well", but what does that mean? How sensitive to the wind is it? Was planning on a 12 man tipi in the future but with this I may have to wait and see how people feel the durability and weather resistance is.
