Seek Outside 4 Man vs. Kifaru Sawtooth

Hi,

I am a newbie, and have just gotten the bug to potentially purchase a hot tent for my Wyoming hunting adventures. I would like to keep pack weight down as much as possible. I have read the Lite Outdoors stove is a good, efficient way to do that so I am considering it. I am also considering the SO 4 man vs the Kifaru Sawtooth. I see that are some Cimarron's for sale in the classified ads section, but I cannot reply yet as I just signed up. I am also 6'-4", so height is definitely a consideration and why I am looking at the 4 man instead of the Cimarron. Any thoughts on these comparisons? Ideally, I could use the tipi for summer backpacking too by adding a nest (mosquitoes....uggh...) and for winter treks as I attempt to bag an elk. I will likely be doing some solo, but have a spouse and some kiddos that will eventually be hunting with me and can share the pack weight. So, I want it to be big enough for 2 adults with stove, but light/tall/large enough that I can pack it in solo with stove. Remember....I am 6'-4" so headroom is paramount.

Thanks for the pictures! If anyone has a Seek Outside 4 man tipi or the Kifaru Sawtooth, I am in the market for one for the right price. I am still a newbie so you will have to message me until I get privileges (hopefully next week).

I would agree with their recommendation. I'm 5'8" and there isn't lot of extra head space when sitting in low chair.

The 4 man is really great,2 doors is awesome.I am now rocking the sawtooth,both good choices,they all have Mosquito door option,liners,i jave a Bear paw wilderness design nest for the sawtooth,work really great.

The sawtooth is quicker to set,the only con on this shelter is the low height of the zipper,SO 4 man the zipper goes all the way to the top.

At 6'4" your not standing strait up in either one. If you're worried about hitting the sides while stretched out lying down, then either one is going to work. I've owned both a SO 4 man and a Cimarron and like the Cim much better. It's lighter, easier to pitch, easier to find a location to pitch, and cheaper. Although the 4 man was nice it just didn't do it for me. YMMV

Dirtydan, are you around 6'-4"? Just curious if the Cimarron works for you better and are my height.

I am 6'4" and have a sawtooth. No problem sitting in a helinox chair. I can stand right in the peak, but that is also very close to the stove pipe. Its a palace for one person (I hunt alone) and does not weigh that much more than my megatarp. As for length sleeping. No issues. FYI, I put the rear pole in on an angle towards the back supported by a piece of wood or a stone so it is not in the way.

6’2” so not far off. My wife and i took the Cimarron out last weekend which also included the 60lbs lab. We all ,and I mean ALL fit on a queen mattress on one side of the pole and never even came close to the sides.

That is great info to know, so thanks! Maybe I should consider the Cimarron since I won't be able to stand up in either the Cimarron or 4-man tipi. I will be packing it, along with a stove, at times so that would definitely cut down on weight.

The sawtooth is roomy. Defiantly big enough for 2 man, and as said above "a palace for 1 man".
Me (I'm 6'2"), My wife (5'5"), My son (12yo), my daughters (9 & 6 yo) and my dog (50lbs) all slept in a kifaru sawtooth. It was tight, but all 5 of us and the dog did it for 2 nights.

And I have no problem standing up in it, but that last two inches to get to 6'4" may do away with that. I am not sure. It would be close.

Ok, this has me puzzled. How did you fit a queen mattress in the Cimarron? I've used mine a lot, often with nests. The nests are tight for two sleeping pads but enough room for me and the wife. This is maybe the width of a single mattress. I can't fathom how you'd fit a queen in a Cimarron without deleting the pole and hanging the tent from a tree.

Happen to have any photos of how you did it? Did you have the pole over at an angle?

i Don’t have any pics with a queen mattress but I did a live Facebook feed showing a recent trip. If you jump on SeekOutside Facebook page Becca (manager of SO) posted pics with a full nest with a queen and a single in the full nest. You definitely have to kick the center pole out to one side, but it does work.

Gotcha. Couldn't find pics as I don't Faceyspace that often but it makes sense if you kick the pole over a bit.

The seek 4 man is a treat tent with plenty of room for 2 guys and gear. The 1 thing with it though is you need a large area to pitch the tent. Sometimes hard to find an area big enough to set it up.
