Hey guys,
how often should a shelter be seam sealed? Are there indicators to watch for or just something to do every season? And is it alright to just seal ontop of your old seal?
thanks for the advise

Hey Bowkill02,

I can only speak to Canvas and Relite Material (a lightweight synthetic). We would recommend sealing your seams if you ever experienced a problem or if your shelter gets a ton of exposure to the elements throughout the year. I wouldn't see any problems with doing it every season however just to be safe.

A product out there that customers have had good results with is Iosso Seam Sealer. They recommend applying it to both sides. Hope this helps!

Thanks tyler, I'll check that out. I don't get a ton of bad weather but I noticed some of the old silicone was starting to peal and just wanted to stay ahead of it.

I seam sealed my tipi once and its been good and don't see it "peeling" off any where. I guess if visible signs of compromise is seen or water is seen leaking them reseal that part, but over all I wouldn't expect , if it was a good job done the first time, you would have to repeat this very often at all, depending on use.

I used silicone from a caulk tube mixed with thinner until it became a slury composition a slight bit thicker than syrup.

Edit *
Sometimes guys get it too thick and slob it on, and I feel personally that is a mistake. It takes very little and should be thinned enough where it seals itself into the stich lines instead of just building it up on it.
