I'm in the process of pillar bedding, chopping down and lightening a short action savage I have. It's a walnut stock, after I've sanded the old finish off should I seal it before I paint or will the paint do that?
Using the same krylon and clear coat I use on all my rifles.

I seal with a thin epoxy prior to painting wood. Smith's is the brand I have in the cabinet. I've also used a west marine sealer.

Is it necessary? It is for a painted wood boat. A rifle stock isn't going to get that wet, but it's good insurance.

I just sealed a Boyds stock for my savage that I sanded down to the bare wood, pillar bedded, chopped down and lightened as well. I used Brownell's Alumahyde II, which is supposedly a superior epoxy based paint than krylon or rustoleum as far as durability and resistance to solvents go. If you use that you will seal and paint at the same time. I used just the matte clear on my Boyds laminate and I am going to use colors to camo paint another stock that is just plain wood.

You could use a sanding sealer. Available at any hardware store. Paint it on, sand with 220-320 and then spray your camo. I’ve never done this on a rifle stock but it gives a smooth and durable base on furniture.
