I'm going to take my high school son back to South Dakota this fall. Our first trip was to do the youth antlerless tag last fall. My question is on timing. He has a long weekend in mid-October. Is this a good time to do spot and stalk? Granted we don't have a lot options for different times, but if it's terrible then maybe I'd try to sell momma on getting him out of school a different time.

Lots of guys on podcasts talk about going on opening weekend but that isn't an option. Thank you!

Anytime is a good time. Read the new regulations carefully as some areas have changed to limited/permit zones.

Time frame should be fine. The only way it would be better would be to come during the rut, late November but then rifle season is going to be going.

I usually like to get out last few days of october and first week of November. That mainly applies to whitetail and east river though, I haven’t completely figured out when the mule deer pre-rut and rut turn on compared to the whitetails. That being said, I tend to not hunt as much in the middle of October because they are harder to find. Not in summer routine, less visible, and not searching. But going out west where you can do more spot and stalk for more visible animals should still be productive! And any hunt is a fun hunt, I’m sure you will have some success whenever you go. Good luck!
