I have limited experience there but would agree on the herds, several properties that were traditionally good were virtually void of deer!

Ya, no reason we should be killing mule deer does in South Dakota.

Limiting resident archery hunters will move you to the top of the naughty list. SDGFP is scared of that group.
I will stir the shit on Facebook just to get them going they are an excitable bunch. Really get them going and get the trad guys hacking on the compound guys and it’s like fly fisherman.

Why did SD wait so long to start this process? If deer numbers are down to the point where areas are virtually void, should they not have limited the tags earlier? Seems like states are letting things get out of hand and then having to take drastic measures to bring numbers back up. I know a very little about a little but it doesn't make sense to me.

SD acts about the quickest. 1 year they opened the season Sept 1st. fro NRs and Residents. Resident bow hunters wet their pants and cried about it and by the end of the winter it changed.
It isn't pushed by their Game and Fish it is pushed by a few loud residents...the same ones that complain about deer hunting opportunity in general but also complained when the suggestion was made that instead of the possibility of holding multiple buck tags in one year they would be limited to only one buck tag thus meaning more individuals would get tags.

Just make the Non resident tags only valid 1/2mile from the road or further and the majority of residents wouldn't even know they are there.

I think you are confusing Sd and Nd. Nd had talked about the one tag system as they have a lot longer to wait to get tags. I have never had a year I didn"t draw rifle whitetail tags here if I wanted one they are my second choice after the any deer tag both east and west river.

They have dropped the ball with the ehd break out of two years ago in some counties but they also offer refunds on tags right before the season. They ended the youth being able to shoot mule deer does which is a plus but they should get rid of muley doe tags in a bunch of counties.

Another factor is the reservations but thats a whole different topic.

Seems like many years ago before SD became so dang popular that it was in the 3k range, but I haven't looked at that data for a long time. I'm sure it was way up there based on all the youtube content.... Just let me know when it goes draw so i can start building points.

Unless I am completely mistaken SD residents can get (2) rifle buck tags in the same year granted in different areas (i.e. West River, East River, BHs etc.)

ND as long as I have known Residents can only get 1 rifle buck tag. I'll say no doubt since 2006 at least as that is when I really started archery hunting ND and my roommate in college who is still one of my best friends ins from ND and got a rifle tag most years until he moved to MN.

I thought you were talking about across all weapons. Nd was thinking of going to one buck tag for anything. Hell we can get a rifle tag for east and west and black hills and refuge. You could draw one for muzzle loader also and then archery tags. With them changing that you can only apply for two draws in the first draw im sure it cut some people back but there are always left over tags. There is no limit of the amount of tags you can get if they are left. 11 years ago they were giving triple tags out like candy west river. Between me my wife and son we could have shot 15 deer with west and east river tags which i found to be excessive. I wouldnt mind if they went to one rifle tag in the first draw as im 10 minutes from either west or east river. A lot of west river wont get any where till the tribes agree to manage the deer also.

I think my brother had 5 tags one year. Once they got past all the draws you could just buy them. I picked up a leftover right before the season the last rifle deer I shot in SD. Now it takes 3 or 4 pref points in that unit. Don't know if it's popularity or population or a combination of both.

I believe it was around 5800 for deer and 3000ish for Antelope.
I'm pretty sure that 3,000 for antelope was Resident and Nonresident combined. The second graphic illustrates the real problem in SD.

I am sad that SD is going to a draw for archery deer tags on public. I love hunting that state and it's been my fall back plan state. I live out west so my interest in SD is Whitetails. If SD is concerned with Muleys then have the draw be for Muleys archery tags and not all deer tags--just a thought

The draw is for "Any Deer" tags. There should be plenty of whitetail only tags available, if not still OTC.

Can you show me where SD archery deer tags have been broken down to 'any deer' and 'whitetail' deer separated? My understanding is that they have never been separated like the West River rifle tags are. Since the commission announcement didn't explicitly state that archery WT deer would still be unlimited on public within the buy time frame window I figured if I wanted to hunt archery WT on public I would need to get one of these 2200 tags?

I really like the unlimited WT archery public land deer option--maybe that is still a thing but it wasn't stated so I am concerned. I hope I am mistaken.
