Scope for Marlin 1895 SBL

I picked up a new Ruger/Marlin 1895 SBL in 45-70. Looking for a 1-4 scope to put on the rail with Warne QD rings.

Use will be for medium size game out to 125 yards. Will be shooting Underwood 300 grain JHP running 2,100 fps at the muzzle.

Looking at the VX Freedom 1.5-4x28 IER.

In a perfect world I would like a German #4 reticle but Leupold will no longer put in custom reticles.

Been 30 years since I shot a 45-70. A little concerned about getting a scope ring on my eye so was leaning toward the IER and mounting it back close to the ghost ring sight. What height rings would I need that would still allow me to put flip up caps on the scope?

Any thoughts and photos of a similar setup would be appreciated.

Any other options I should be looking at?

Don't want to use a red dot.

Mine is a .44 mag. Scope-wise, more magnification than your specs, but I am a huge firedot fan. VX-3HD 1.5-5x20 in Vortex Rings 0.87 height. It's a super cool setup for my purposes (hogs). I did have to remove the ghost ring, but that was easy.

Burris fixed 2.75x20. Not sure about it being offered in the German 4 though.

I want the scope eyepiece to be forward of the ghost ring so that means an IER or scout model. Like the one in the attached photo [not my rifle]

I use a Leupold FX-II Scout 2.5x28 on mine. I believe they are now discontinued unfortunately. I could get a picture later if you are interested.

To keep the Ghost Ring, you’ll need a scout scope as you mentioned. Limited options out there, the Leupold is probably a good choice. Burris makes a 2-7 but I’m not sure that much magnification is really needed for a 45-70.

If you want to use a normal eye relief scope, you’ll have to run high rings. I tried it out. Scope is way above the bore and looks like shit. Not to mention there is next to zero cheek weld due to the height of the comb on that stock.

I also played around with red dots. I think an Aimpoint or Trijicon would work really well on that lever gun.

A red dot would be the logical choice for woods use but I like the look of the scope more.

The top end of 4 power would be all that I need in a scope.

I will order the scope after the Christmas madness settles down, mock it up and then order the correct height rings.

They are a cool looking rifle.
