I really haven't thought in "yards" in about 7 months now since I switched to the Revic binos. I don't even pay attention to the yardage number because it doesn't matter unless I'm shooting at big game and at the fringes of the bullets killing ability.
I get instant, trued elevation and base or vector wind data for that gun, in the current air I'm shooting in that day, in MILs, right on front of my face in real time. When solo (nearly all my mountain hunting) I already need to be determining a wind speed and wind direction, in real time, while getting setup for shot, and keeping eyes on a target that blends into terrain, while also determining vegetation movement/potential mirage feedback at the target and/or mid way point to determine wind at target, etc. Adding or subtracting from a full value spit out from the solver in front of my face, while doing all the aforementioned things simultaneously is easier for my pea brain to make fast and reliable (not always) wind calls.
No conversions, no "gun number" like I used forever, no flipping through hard dope cards, no pulling out phone and looking at screensaver for screenshot of dope, or any of the other ways I used to do it.
Is it the "be all end all". No way. Should one still be familiar with alternate quick/accurate methods. Absolutely. Shit can still happen fast out there sometimes, and maybe I need to grab a buddies rifle, etc. Or maybe a battery takes a crap, or the unit simply quits working when the ground feels like temps are over 125F (ask me how I know).
I don't see myself deviating from on-board, real time, reliable ballistics right in front of my face anytime soon for the vast majority of my shooting and hunting. Rock on with what has shown to work well/best for you while practicing in the mountains though.
