School me on BDC reticles, turrets, etc.

Dialing ranges using your elevation turret is not hard and much more precise. Figure out what your bullet drop is in inches and then dial that using your elevation knob. 6 inches of drop at 300 yards equals dialing up 2 MOA, or 8 clicks for majority of scopes with 1/4 MOA adjustment. 400 yards and 20 inches of drop is 5 moa, or 20 clicks. This can easily be adjusted for angle of shot, elevation, different types of bullets and drops etc.
BDC reticles are faster, sure. But I will be taking my sweet time on any shot over 250 yards any how so I don't see much of a benefit.

I have a friend who missed his first elk this fall using a bdc reticle on the wrong power, oh wait that was me.

Probably won't ever do that again as I watch it like a hawk now, but I have found it is nice to dial and just hold dead on on anything over 300.
