It looks like Savage has come out with a new action, the Impulse. It is a straight pull bolt and is interchangeable for right/left handed people.

I don’t know much about the mechanics of it but appears to be relatively innovative, especially with the right/left interchangeability.

To my knowledge there aren’t a ton of straight pull bolt actions, and really the only two I know of are the old Swiss K31’s and rimfire Browning T-Bolts.

Apparently there was more on the site earlier today with videos but they were quickly taken down.

As a southpaw this is very intriguing.

Especially when it comes to resale could go to either LH or RH and shooter. there are a few straight pull actions in Europe. Blaser is the most well known.

Cool technology, especially the changing from right to left.

But am I the only one that things this may be a solution looking for a problem? While I agree it looks like one could cycle the bolt quicker than a standard 90 or 60 degree bolt, how much faster? 1 second maybe? Not sure how much 1 second would make a difference in a hunting situation....

Videos here......https://forum.accurateshooter.com/threads/new-savage-impulse-straight-pull.4024502/

Thanks. The videos were originally on the Savage site but were taken down. It appears they were unintentionally uploaded to Savage’s site before they were supposed to. I’ve added a direct link to the videos here as well.

I really hope this is available in 22LR

It surprises me, but also doesn't because of the large geographic differences in the USA - why biathlon is not more popular here. I think another reason is that there's only 1 super expensive option for a competition biathlon rifle (like $2000 just for an Anschutz action) there's a cheaper Russian Izhmash action that used to be available here before the import ban, at around the $300-$500 level, but it's clunky compared to the Aschnutz. So for beginners getting into the sport a Savage MKII heavy barreled bolt action is really the only option.

That’s interesting. Probably a lot cheaper than buying a 22-250 barrel for my Blaser. I’ve always wanted to try an AccuTrigger.

I like it but in typical Savage fashion it’s ugly. Oh well. I’ll be keeping an eye on these.

Looks interesting. I’m a little concerned that grit/sand/dirt might cause a bearing to stick and freeze the bolt. It probably wouldn’t take too much. I like the innovation, however.

They are calling it an Impulse Hog Hunter in 308 and 30-06 1000-1100 or so but can't find the place I was reading about it.

Is that an integral picatiny rail I see? Will be interesting to see the price point for these.

Yeah at first I wasn’t too excited to see the integrated picatiny rail due to weight, but then read on another forum that this is going to be an aluminum receiver, so it should be lighter than steel receivers.

I think I saw the MSRP was $1,200.

Straight pulls have been around a while and make an off again/on again appearance. More common in Europe than hear through. I had one made by Browning some 20 odd years ago. Worked ok, sort of an odd duck.

The real weakness in most of the systems is lack of primary extraction. Camming up on the bolt lift really puts a lot of force on the extractor to pull a case out of the chamber.

Can anybody with a heym straight pull bolt chime in on this as to how well they work when exposed to dirt, ice, etc. I think they use the same ball bearing system for bolt lockup?

Very interesting. I've seen the Heym and always thought it was innovative. Anyone snag any pics though before it was all taken down? I'm late to the party it seems and can't find anything.
