Thoughts? Suggestions?

I snagged one for under 300 bucks last year. Saw them this year for 425 in store. I have had issues with the magazine. Its cheap and if it isn't placed just right you run into feed issues. That said im not a great shot but I had Dime sized 3 shot groups at 100 with mine.

Savage 93R17 here. My favorite rifle of them all, by far! Bought the heavy-barreled one. It was on sale for $249.

Sooo much fun making Rabbits do backflips with headshots!

Agree with this 100 percent. Have the same exact gun and got it on sale for the same price. A steal I thought. Absolutely love it and it is a tack driver. Like that it has the wood stock and the heavy barrel. Never really thought about owning one because I always had a 22. Wish I would’ve bought years sooner.

I waited till Savage came out with the A17 Target Sporter Laminate model before I bought one and I've actually been pretty impressed with how well it shoots. My only issue with the one I have was the trigger was beyond bad right out of the box. Not only was it very heavy but it had a lot of pretravel and that pretravel was notchy as hell. I took the trigger all apart and spent half a day sanding, polishing, and tuning on it. If I recall I shortened one of the springs as well. I was able to get the trigger down to around 2lbs with no creep/pretravel but it took a lot of work to get there. I also have a heavy barrel SS Laminate thumbhole Sav 93/17HMR but my heavy barrel A17 will generally out shoot it. Except for the trigger issue my A17 has been a positive experience.

The Remington 597 17HMR were all recalled and Remington did a buy back on them years ago. The Savage A17 is a safer design for the higher pressure 17HMR.

Thanks for the info guys. I shot a 17 hmr in Colorado a few weeks ago and was super impressed. Was always a 22 guy but that 17 was amazing. I’m left handed tho and hate right handed bolt action rifles. I think I will get one of the A17’s.

Had one of these for years. Flat shooting and accurate as hell.

They make lefty bolts. I'm left handed as well. When sighting it in I started getting debris blowback and made me think twice. I bought it for my dad mainly at our hunting cabin to snipe groundhogs with. It works fine for me as a lefty when I shoot once or twice. If your going to shoot it regularly I would snag the dedicated lefty bolt.

I have shot the A17 a ton. super accurate and easy to take a part and clean which was awesome while prairie dog hunting. had a perfect almost windless day and had no issues killing P-Dogs at 200+ yards.

Also, Butler Creek makes 25rnd mags for the A17. They hang down quite a ways and aren't particularly attractive looking but they feed well and are much easier to load than the factory drum mags. I bought a couple for my A17 when Butler Creek first came out with them and they work great but damn can you burn through some ammo with those puppies.

I have the Savage 93R17 BTVSS and it is an absolute tack driver and a blast to shoot. Have considered the A17 for a while now but haven’t taken the plunge.

Indeed! While out there, for sh!ts and giggles, found an old 12ga shell lying around... put it on a log, walked back 80yds, put her on the kwik stix... son of a B!tch if didn't hit it first shot!

I've decimated whole entire families of Ground Squirrel with that thing. Furthest one 104yds while sittin' on a slope off the kwik stix!

no A17 here but as a lefty I went with the 93R17 with a heavy barrel and a left handed bolt. too bad I have a bunch of 22LR and a limited supply of 17HMR, the 17 is way more fun to shoot....

Heck Yes it IS! Once I shot with it? I was like why would anyone ever fuss with the 22LR ever again? I actually bought mine specifically for a purpose. This place where I'd wait to snipe rabbits.. distance was about 80yds. and with the Coper-22's we have to use.. that's right at about where the trajectory starts to fall off.

Did some research, found out .17 HMR is like 125yds zero. Got one, then the next year? Had my limit of 5 rabbits by 6:40am! Then went and tried for predators and called in a Grey Fox, but it wasn't time for them yet so had to let him pass. Was such a great feeling that I had this problem, came up with a plan, had to wait to execute the new plan, then when I did it was such a glowing success!
