Looking to buy a new rifle. Savage 6.5x.284 and may want to convert that to a .338 win mag. Is this possible on the same receiver?

If not, would buying a .338 and converting to 6.5x.284 work?

I have a need for a .338 for ONE hunt, then have no need for it again and would like a 6.5x.284 as a final rifle.

Thanks

Short answer is no they aren't the same bolt face. You could use a 35 Whelan or 338/06 then use for a 6.5x284 or 6.5/06

Realunlucky is spot on with his response. The 338-06 or Whelen should fit the bill just fine. I am going to be nosey and ask why the need for the 338 for just one hunt?

If you get the 6.5-284 it'll likely be a short action, and then no, you would not be able to convert it to 338 WM. On the other hand, you could get a 338 WM, and if you switched it to a short action 6.5, you could load long bullets for it without taking up powder space. That's what I've done with a 260 AI. However, as others have mentioned, you would also need to switch the bolt face to a standard bolt head and also get a new mag. My suggestion would be to get the 338, then just swap barrels to 264 WM, 6.5 PRC, or something with a magnum bolt face.

get the 6.5x284 and for just one hunt ask your buddies if they have a .338 that you can borrow for the hunt.
