I recently acquired a 1912 make Savage 1899B (303 Savage) that sadly has a shot out barrel. I took it to my local gunsmith to see if they would reline the barrel and somehow walked out with a quote for $2500 to rebarrel it with a Shilen and cerakote everything. Still not sure how we got to that point.

Anyone have any experience relining one of these rifles and have a smith they recommend to do the work? I don’t have much money invested in the rifle so I’m willing to spend some but also want to maintain the octagon barrel and patina.

Is it truly "shot out" or is it just dark and pitted? The reason that I ask is that the 303 is a pretty mild cartridge and it would take thousands of shots to shoot it out. I am skeptical of someone shooting a 99 so much that they shoot out the barrel, even if it is 100 years old.

If it is just old, then a good lapping with JB Bore Paste may do the trick. Go slow, don't get too aggressive and you should get it to the point where it will shoot OK.

Not many gunsmiths will rebarrel a Savage lever action, and those that do will charge accordingly, but $2,500 is ridiculous. I paid $600 for a 99 rebarrel through McGowen in 2018. It was a gun my grandfather bought me to kill my first deer with, so it made sense. Not sure McGowen offers this anymore, but you should call. Another option is finding a used barrel on auction sites, though you won’t know what you’re getting. Unless it’s sentimental, you might cut your losses and buy a more modern 99.

When you say JB bore paste do you mean the non-embedding compound or bore bright or both?
