Savage 100 ultralite carbon 300 wsm

Really interested in the savage 100 ultralite. I’ve seen them for $1200, seems like a good value. I plan to use it for elk hunting. My issue is, it’s a 24” barrel and I plan to use it suppressed (another 8 inches). I’d really like the option of shortening the barrel if that felt too long. I was told you can’t shorten carbon fiber wrapped barrels. Does anyone know if this is possible? Or would there be a better option?

No, you can't shorten most carbon wrapped barrels. One make, I'm pretty sure you can (It isn't what Savage uses), but you thread the carbon if you shorten. I'm not sure if threaded carbon will hold up to a suppressor or not.

If you want to go suppressed with a shorter barrel, you are better off with a donor rifle to build off of or just gathering the parts.

Right. My plan was for a tikka t3x stainless to either cut and thread, or swap out barrels. Can’t find one in 300 wsm though.

The easy way to go would be a T3X in any standard belted magnum, and rebarrel with a prefit to 300 WSM with the shorter tube. All of the Tikka actions are the same length and you'll likely want the longer mag box anyway.

Any tikka with a mag bolt face will work for you, the factory LA magnum magazine can be modified with a dremmel to reliably cycle the wsm rounds. Or you can buy an aftermarket mag from Hells Canyon Armory, you might not think you'll ever need it but a magazine length of 3"+ is where you want to be with any of the wsms
I'd look for a tikka donar and drop another $500 on a 10 twist threaded prefit barrel throated out for 215’s

So you think I’d be better off finding a LA magnum as opposed to a 300 wsm? Then swapping barrel?

All Tikka actions are the same length. The mag box and bolt stop are the main differences between a long or short cartridge offerings. The actual bolt and receiver are the same between the two configurations. The short config has a mag box with a filler block in it and the bolt stop is longer so the stroke matches the mag box.

I would find the long configuration for a belted mag so that I got the longer mag box, long action bolt stop, and the correct bolt face. Because this is in the Long Range forum, I'm assuming you will want to load long VLD's and your COAL will be too long for the short magazine hence the suggestion for the long mag. Feeding is not too hard to get right. A little sheet metal bending, or you can do some trimming.
