Sauer 100 - Talk me out of it

My current set-up:
I am looking to replace my primary whitetail hunting rifle. I currently hunt with a Bergara B14 woodsman in 7mm-08. The build quality is excellent, the rifle is accurate, bolt is slick, and the trigger is good. When I bought it, I thought I'd keep it forever, but I simply haven't fallen in love with it. It is just a little bit too heavy, and isn't nimble in the heavy stuff. I'll probably sell it to make room in the safe for its replacement.

I live in Tennessee and have the opportunity to hunt both in the woods in some heavily forested and hilly terrain (where a lightweight and handy rifle is perfect) as well as over some fields and food plots (where a 400yd shot would not be out of the question). I'm looking for a do-it-all rifle that carries well and still has enough oomph for longer shots. In terms of caliber, I'd still look to stick with some of those common mid-power calibers that are still fun to shoot at a day at the range (7-08, 6.5 Creed, 270, etc.).

If I'm hunting where shots are within 200yards I'll usually reach for my Winchester 94 30-30. It is compact, lightweight, and carries beautifully in hand. Otherwise, I default to the Bergara.

With all that being said...

The Sauer 100 has caught my eye. By all accounts it sounds like it is a great rifle. Accurate, great trigger, good bolt, good magazine capacity, and Light-ish weight. Additionally, it's widely available online under $600. Has anyone had any experience with these? Are they comfortable to carry? Is there any reason why I shouldn't consider it?

The Sauer 100 has caught my eye. By all accounts it sounds like it is a great rifle. Accurate, great trigger, good bolt, good magazine capacity, and Light-ish weight. Additionally, it's widely available online under $600. Has anyone had any experience with these? Are they comfortable to carry? Is there any reason why I shouldn't consider it?

The Sauer 100 is probably the only rifle that directly competes with Tikka. They are very good rifles.

I had the same Bergara in 308 and felt exactly the same as you did about it. I sold it and got an Xbolt Speed in 7-08. The Sauer 100 was my second choice. The Browning got the nod because they don't make a true short action in the Sauer 100 (similar to Tikka).

I had a sauer 100 in 6.5 prc. It was a good rifle and I killed a couple cow elk with it.
Ultimately I decided I didn’t need a prc for what I’m doing with my rifles but nothing against the gun.
I wouldn’t hesitate to own another one.

FYI, pretty sure the Mauser m-18 is the same if you like the features/price on those over the Sauer. I have no experience with either

Overall it’s good rifle, only if you can overcome hard recoil pad.

The only thing a tikka has over it is after market support. the Sauer had not caught on enough to have much after market support.

Does anyone know if the Mauser M18 comes in a true short action?

I don’t think so. Same goes for the Sauer 100. Built on a long action.

I own a Sauer 100 and it’s a great rifle. When I was in the market I was trying really hard to like the tikka that was next to the Sauer, but the Sauer just felt better in every way to me. Flush mag, very good trigger, stiffer stock and egronomics on stock are very good. I do not notice any negatives on the length of pull, but I’m 6’3” with arms like a monkey.

Main downside is that after market is basically non existent. So if you want to tinker it’s not a good option. Only thing I’ve done to mine was had it cerakoted and installed Spartan gunsmith adapters in the stock.

It fits me really well, but I am also 6'3". if you are 5'6" it might be an issue. However, i have had my buddies wife shoot it who is maybe 5' on good day and she was hitting targets are 900 plus.

I just purchased a Sauer 100 Cerakote in 6.5 Creedmoor. Have not shot it but can say the fit and finish is great. The bolt is smooth with no slop at all.
