What do you guys use for satellite phones etc. I plan on investing in one just wondering what brand everyone likes.

I don't know anyone that uses one anymore. It's all about the satellite messengers like the Garmin or Zoleo's. Phones are starting to come into play for sat messaging and sat calls are not far off on your phone either.

Would you trust your iPhone over something like an inreach?

No. It’s not there yet in all areas and way less reliable for now.

Garmin makes a “hub” unit where you connect your phone to the device for interfacing.

The hub is the GNSS/GLONASS receiver board and antenna plus a ble chip, so Bluetooth to phone for typing, sending photos, etc. using the garmin hub for reception.

This unit.

I haven’t had a chance to test it myself as the ISO came out 2 days into my moose hunt.

I wasn’t saying it’s better, just making you aware it’s an option.

For me the I phone will likely do. When I’m back country I’m likely not alone and others know our general location and it’s only about 4 weeks a year.

Even though my phone has sat messaging now I’m not giving up the inReach quite yet. The inReach is more robust than the phone and if I’m really hurt I’ve just got to get to that one button, push it and wait. The iPhone has a few extra steps and I may or may not have to aim it.

Real life scenario last Friday. Shot bull in dark north Idaho slope. Have iPhone 14 Pro and zoleo. Was solo. While butchering got ahold of the Mrs on the iPhone Sat. At the same time was communicating with my packer friend list on Zoleo. Zoleo was then quicker to use while butchering as I did not have to wait for the satellite to come into line for use by messenger. Simply could send texts and pick up my phone when wanted. The messenger process has been fine since it came out, but can see where a zoleo like system has its place. Primarily because not everyone has access to ios18 and with zoleo you don’t have to wait to locate the satellite.
