It’s been my lifelong dream to hunt the far north of Saskatchewan for giant, chocolate horned whitetails. I’m finally in a position to make it happen, hopefully next season, 2025. Any recommendations anyone can make would be greatly appreciated. What outfitters, gear recommendations, time of the season, anything you can think of. I’ll be flying from northern New York State. This will be my first out of state hunting trip.

No whitetails in "far north Saskatchewan". Its boreal with moose and black bears.
You want to hunt east central.
Look for outfits around Carrot River, Preeceville, Meadow Lake into the Porcupine FP area.
Fly into Saskatoon and rent a car.

I live in sask. Numbers and quality bucks are way down up here. Cwd has hit hard and we've had some difficult winters. I would look elsewhere.

I personally love his tent camp, It’s just a cool hunt the way it all works in the tent it’s you and 1 or 2 of your hunting buddies. Chad his son runs the tent camp with another helper they will guide you and cook for ya food is not over the top but is really good. Please feel free to reach out to me for any other questions you can reach me at 7047916884 it’s Ryan

I don't have any specific outfitter recommendations, but I do have some gear and equipment recommendations coming from half a lifetime of hunting northern MN.

First, it can get cold there. Cold like you have never felt before. Unless your outfitter is running box blinds with heaters, invest in good cold-weather clothing. Whatever you are using in New York, unless it has you sweating like a Chinese kid at a Kardashian factory, won't cut it. Key pieces are core coverings, boots, and mittens. I prefer mittens over gloves as mittens keep your fingers together.

For your gun, make sure it is cold-proof as well. That means either no grease/oil in your bolt, or use one that is good to -40F. I don't know how many times I have talked to guys who went up north to hunt that had rifle failures due to improper lubrication that ended up gumming up in the freezing cold.

Good luck and I hope your adventure ends up to be everything you have been dreaming about!

Thanks for the pointers. I am from Northern New York and have hunted the Adirondack Mountains my whole life. I’m no stranger to super cold weather, although it’s not as common as it once was, especially during hunting season. The cold temps in Saskatchewan, coupled with the fact that hunts are sitting on stand from sunrise to dark, cold weather gear is a must. I’m seriously thinking about a Heater Body Suit. Most of the outfitters I have contacted have heaters in the blinds, but I have heard from people who have tried this, a heated blind in extreme cold weather has its own set of problems, mostly condensation. I want gear that will allow me to sit for 9 hours in sub zero temps. I have also heard from veteran Saskatchewan hunters that the last week of the season is great for big bucks. The rut is winding down, and the big guys are hitting the bait piles trying to gain back some fat. Makes sense.
Great tip on making sure your rifle bolt is free of any heavy grease. I always disassemble the bolt on all of my rifles late summer and clean thoroughly, degrease with brake cleaner, and VERY lightly lube with G96. Only a very thin film that is wiped clean with paper towels. Never had a problem down to-20F.

One thing that turns me off with a lot of these outfitters is the fine that they impose if you shoot a buck smaller than a certain size. I have shot several really nice bucks for Northern New York, but probably all under 120”. I doubt I have ever seen a 150” buck in person. I’m not going to Saskatchewan to shoot a 120” deer, but I don’t want to have to worry about paying a fine if I shoot a 135” deer. I understand their reasoning why they implement these rules, I just wouldn’t feel comfortable hunting there.
