Sad news from the ibex hunt. Hunter falls to his death

Sorry it happened. When I first read the post I thought, mountains in Florida???? Then I read the link. Sad.

I've driven by the Floridas several times on my way to Coues deer and other hunts/vacations. They look absolutely terrifying from the highway. It's flat as can be on all sides and they just jut straight up out of the desert floor. I would love to do that hunt, but I haven't actually made myself even apply for it as of yet.

Sad for sure but easy to get into that predicament in those mountains.

You should do the hunt (or stop in to glass them up) at least once in your life, tough hunt but really cool animals to watch and pursue. Way back before laser rangefinders we used modified for archery Ranging prism rangefinders. Leaning over a crumbly cliff to measure an angle and get the range to calculate the cut for your buddy's shot could be quite exciting to say the least.

I'll start putting in one of these days, and then not let my wife do any googling of the hunt area to find tragedies like this. That $1600 tag eats up my whole tag budget for the entire year currently.

I truly hate to hear that. It is a strange, beautiful, horrifying and extremely dangerous place.

You can’t cheat the mountain

My heart goes out to his family, and hats off to everyone involved in the recovery. That place is no joke.

Sad to hear. I’ve taken some nasty falls on that mountain myself. Quit hunting one time after it snowed over 12” on the mountain. Drew the archery tag another time and didn’t even go because I couldn’t find anyone to go with me. After some of the falls I’ve taken on that rock I wasn’t going by myself.
