SAAMI has approved 25 Creedmoor (Hornady)

With Hornady, Berger, and Sierra all making very high BC 131-138gr bullets in 25 cal it's kind of resurrected and breathed new life in to the 25's and made them about as popular as I've ever seen.

People can love em or hate em but I think Hornady has been doing a good job of bringing things to the shooting world that actually appeal to large groups instead of niche market items. With so much new interest in 25's standardizing the 25 Creedmoor is a smart play. If the interest level maintains for the 25 cals I would expect them to do the same thing with a 25 PRC based off a necked down 6.5PRC.
I would really like a 25 PRC. Has anyone heard if this is a real possibility??

I’m having one built, still a wild cat.

I believe I remember hearing on the Hornady podcast they said something about it being over bore. Which I assume means they don’t have plans of introducing a saami version.

My 23" with lapua brass and 134s using rl16 is spicy at 2900+, I'd say a 20" version of my barrel would be getting to that same level likey just past 2800. I'd not run the rifle there, back it down to mid/low 2700s. At this point a 6cm with 290-300g7 bullets going 100-150+ fps faster is a better mousetrap.
The 25 benefits from the short mag, that extra powder makes me happy with my 25 SST and Berger 133.

You’re right, the 6 creed velocity beats it, and it’s a great size bullet for the Creedmoor case.

Doubt it will happen soon, if at all. I love my 25 SST! It’s a hammer and matches ballistics of my 7mm SS with a barrel 6” shorter.

But, the 6 PRC is calling to me too… recoil reduction is huge for shooting. I went down from a 7mm mag to a 25 cal and saw significant benefits.

Ya a 6 PRC would be nice also. I want a short action magnum in 6mm or 25 cal. It would be real nice if either had factory ammo to boot. Maybe it’s wishful thinking but I a guy can dream right!? 18-20” barrel at 3,000 FPS

I think a 25prc would run 3k, or close. My 23in tops out with 134s/H1000 3120.

I’m attracted to using lightweight fragmenting monos at high speed out of a short rifle. Like the 107 HBC.

Plus I have easily a barrel’s life worth of 25 cal bullets from all my 25 wildcat and 25-06 loading over the years. I can see using up my stash of 110 ELDx, AB’s and TGK’s for my wife. She wouldn’t be shooting long range, and based on my experience of 6mm to 25 with the same case/charge and same bullet weight, the 25 usually yields around 100 fps more.

Not like it matters much anyway, just the thinking out loud… plus I’ve always like the quarterbore ever since I was a kid!

Well, if they think a 25-6.5 PRC is to over bore for them to make people can definitely rule out any hopes Hornady will SAAMI a 6 PRC.

IMO, Hornady sometimes plays things a little too conservative. Again just my opinion but the 7 PRC is kind of an example of that. It is marketed as being mostly dedicated to the heavy for caliber 175+ bullets so why not put it in the 300 PRC case. Unless, they have plans to do so but at a later date that way they get to sell twice as much. Maybe that's their thinking with a 25 PRC off their 6.5 PRC.

As big of a success as the 6.5 Creedmoor has been I'm not sure it would have been nearly the success it has been if say Hornady introduced their 6.5 PRC at or around the same time they came out with the 6.5 Creed because I think the 6.5 PRC would have largely overshadowed it.

I am amazed at some of the Fudd-like behavior on here.* Do you guys buy an F150 in 1974 and then complain when Ford brings out a new F150 every year too?

*Ok, not really but some of these complaints remind me more of HuntTalk than RokSlide.

Can you use a 6.5 Creedmoor bushing die (with correct bushing) for sizing 25 Creedmoor brass? If so I would assume you could also resize 6.5 Creedmoor brass to 25 Creedmoor brass? Looking at the SAAMI drawing it would appear this would work just fine. Only spec different is bottom of case to bottom of neck which is different by .0061

Yes, that’s what I did, except I use 25cm brass.

I really like my 25cm. Shooting 134 eldm at 2730-2740 has been an easy button. Low recoil, low wind drift, less drop than an 6.5cm, extremely accurate. I’ve been highly impressed with it.

Yes that’s how I size my brass

Saami design is based on pretty thin necks. I believe this will work with alpha brass, I remember it being somewhere around 283-284 loaded. My personal reamer is 291nk, so I neck down alpha/lapua 65 brass for 286 loaded OD. Peterson 25cm brass that I have from 5-6 years ago is 286 loaded, its a bit on thick side.

Necking down Hornady 65cm(it's thin necked) will result just fine, as will alpha brass.

I run 65cm brass into a 283 bushing which usually gives me 282-283od, then run a 255 mandrel through, typically giving 0.0025 neck tension. After initial fireform I usually just use my 284 bushing and no mandrel after.

Humans generally don't like change!

It's the experimenters and early adopters that help move the needle.

What cracks me up is someone that is against say the 7 Backcountry, but support something more obscure. Industry people have hinted that more high pressure designs are coming, so it'll be interesting to see if it actually happens and whether the naysayers will backtrack their stance.

I was somewhat early to adopt Tikkas, back when people said that they felt cheap and plasticky. Tikka was a joke back then - it was too new and different, to the American view of what a rifle should be. Many of those naysayers are now the biggest fans of Tikkas! I don't own any now. Funny, how it works out!

The firearms industry is still operating in the stone age in many ways, so I'm all for new ideas. The market then determines what is sustainable, and the cycle repeats with new ideas from those not afraid of change.

That said, the 25 Creedmoor is so dang close to the old 250 / 250AI that it's just a refresh, but with modern pressure and twist.

I'd be cool with a moderate performance, fast-twist, quarter-bore for medium range, paired with a fast .277 for long+ ranges. A 7mm 180gr is a beast for LR, but that's a lot of recoil. Assuming appropriate bullets available.

I was looking at this as an Option… but WTO up the road is releasing factory brass for the 25 SAW this summer….

And then there’s the 25-7PRC 🤩

All the while my current 6.5cm is plenty capable for anything I do so it’s a non issue for another year or 2 til it’s time for a new barrel 😑
