Ruger No 1

Been messing with the idea of buying a ruger no 1 varminter in .243 and having the barrel chopped back and threaded for a suppressor. It comes with a 26" barrel but because of the falling block action the overall length of the rifle remains relatively short. I was thinking of having it cut back to 20 or 22 inches. This rifle would be for new/young shooters, varmint, antelope and deer at ranges no further than 400 yards. Does anyone know if there are any problems with trying to set this gun up this way? The ruger No 1 is not cheap and I would be hesitant to chop and thread the barrel on such a classy firearm unless I know this would work for my intended purpose. Seems like it could be a pretty good suppressor host and a lot of fun to shoot in this caliber. Rifle link below for those who may not be familiar.

I've often thought that rifles like the Ruger No. 1 and Thompson Encore would make great suppressed rifles. You're right, the overall length is shorter than a comparable bolt action. Like you, I'm not sure I would chop the barrel of a No. 1 just to suppress it.

Maybe do it to a Thompson or H&R? Not the same quality of rifle as the No. 1. But, that just means you're not messing up a nice rifle with the barrel chop.

My truck gun is a youth model H&R Handi rifle in .243. It's very short, making it easy to maneuver in my truck. It's also very cheap. I think I paid $125 for it. The factory trigger was crap. But I smoothed it out with fine grit sandpaper. It's a great trigger now. The blueing wore off very quickly. I fixed that with a can of Rust-Oleum. It's ugly as sin, but it shoots every brand and reload of 85 grain bullet under MOA. More than adequate for a truck gun.

I think you've got a great idea. It'll be an interesting project.

I love the classy looks of a nice No 1 and would hesitate chopping one up.

With that said, I did get a killer deal on a No1 in 30-06 that someone put a muzzle break on.... kind of ugly but its a shooter and is now my beater hunting gun.

Was at a gun show today looking at Ruger No. 1s. Problem is prices at a gun store are collector prices.
I would love to fine a 257 Rob in 1A sporter, but I don't think that ever made them in that configuration. There is a 6.5 Creed out that is a 1A and I am on the hunt for one.

I know chopping the No 1 and adding a suppressor would take it away from its traditional look but I still think it would a really cool configuration to hunt with. This rifle with a 22” barrel and suppressor would still be a very short system. Probably about the same length (Depending on the suppressor) as most normal bolt action hunting rifles while still maintaining a decent barrel length to retain velocity. I’m mostly wondering how much the ballistics of the .243 suffer in a 20 or 22 inch barrel.

I have no experience with suppressors, but i do know first hand that certain single shots (Farquharson's like the Number One in particular) can be picky about barrel harmonics. I can see the weight added to the front of a shortened barrel setting up some possibilities of tuning issues.

The front hanger system often needs to be played with to smooth the harmonics out. There are bush fixes, or going to a Hicks Accurizer (my favourite option).

Another choice may be a Browning B78 which is a quality high wall single that uses a different system for managing the fore end pressure and harmonics.

The Grendel is designed to burn all it's powder in a 16" barrel, and with a suppressor the combo would be a sweetheart for kids to shoot.

 

[6mm Remington]

I have a Ruger 1B in a 6mm Remington and it's a fantastic deer and antelope rifle. It might mess the looks up a bit but it would sure be quiet and chopped to 22" would not hurt the ballistics that much. Maybe around 120 fps or so.
