RUGER M77 MKII LIGHTWEIGHT BUILD

I got a Ruger M77II down to just over 6 pounds bare. Barrel was cut to 16 inches, Fiberglass stock, and Extreme Rifle Works cut metal off the action and barrel. In hindsight a Tikka would have been a better investment. But if you have sentimental value in yours it can be made reasonably light.

Sadly mine is 375 Ruger which is kinda overkill. But it's an example of what can be done. If I had it to do over again I would have swapped the barrel and made it a 30-06. As it is I might handload some 375 rounds to 30-06 level (235 gr bullet at 2400 fps) just so I feel like using it once in a while. I'm really into suppressors now.
what stock did you use?

IMO, this juice isn’t worth the squeeze. You’re going square peg into round hole here.

Sell it if you no longer want the rifle and start over building light from the ground up with plenty of other options for parts.
I get there are better builds, but this was my dads gun, it’s getting restored with his ashes in the new custom stock, sure I could go buy a fierce 6.8 western or 7prc in sub 7 lb package and it would be great.

But this will be within 1 lb, and it’s going to be customized to myself with a tribute to the old man with the rifle I learned to shoot on. That’s hard to beat

MPI can make a custom stock light weighted for under 20oz for the ruger mark ii

Agreed. That’s really cool!

The stock I used was an MPI done by Extreme Rifle Works. Extreme Rifle Works did work on my Rifle twice and I was happy. The folks at MPI seem less impressive (late) so be prepared to wait. But it was nice in the end.

I’d have Brown Precision stock it in a pounder stock. Should finish at 21-22 oz or so and you can get whatever lop you want. Other than that you can lose some weight cutting the barrel down and getting a custom contoured slim brake. While you are at it you can have a Spartan Tripod adapter in stock and drop another pound on bipod.

Following along. I have a tang safety m77 that my uncle gave me. It was my first bolt action. 25-06. Just decided to tinker with it a bit. Usually shoot it at the range a few times a year and it’s incredibly accurate.

Thinking about taking it to the next level and actually hunting it. Am I spinning my wheels here? Doesn’t seem like there is a lot out there for the tang safety models besides a trigger upgrade.

Pulled the custom .35 Whelen barrel off my Ruger MKII to be sent and screwed on Tikka action. I weighed the action to give an idea on the weight saving. Should save roughly 10oz on the action alone.
