I have a Ruger M77 Hawkeye African 35 Whelen I bought used, but in a like new condition. When I first took it to the range several months ago I had multiple misfires with Remington core lokt. (Image of the dented primers of the misfired core lokt attached).
Shrugged it off as I have fired the rifle a good bit since then and have never had a misfire with another brand of ammo. Additionally, I have seen multiple videos online of others getting misfires with Remington ammo out of other Ruger M77 in 35 whelen. However recently I had a single misfire with Buffalo Bore, a load I was planning to hunt with this fall.
This kinda shook my confidence in the rifle and I’d like to address the light strike issue before hunting with it again. I have taken the bolt apart and cleaned the factory grease but I am also considering installing a new spring. There is a stiffer aftermarket spring made by Wolf others have success with in older guns.

My question is does it make sense to replace the firing pin spring in a basically new rifle with less than 200 rounds ran through it?

Are there any other options I should consider to address this issue? I have fired about 70-80 rounds of Barnes factory ammo in the gun and have not had a misfire yet but would like to fix the root of the problem.

I had a Ruger MKII in .35 Whelen a few years ago and was getting misfires as well. Headspace was fine. I replaced the firing pin spring and the old one was pretty compressed compared to the new one. Never had an issue after that.

For the price of a spring it’s worth a try.

What you did in cleaning out the factory grease from the firing pin - and firing pin channel - was the smart first thing to do. And it definitely wouldn't hurt to have an extra-power wolf spring on hand as well, even there ends up being nothing wrong with the original factory spring.
