I can see how that would happen. That said, there are lots of ways to add weight to a pack for training without using a plate. I use rock salt wrapped in a garbage bag and duct taped. No noticeable wear and tear on the pack from that.

Yep that works well...problem I was having was above 65lbs..rock salt takes up too much volume...so went to plates, stays started getting rubbed, went to outdoorsmen...45 and 25 plates stack nicely on it. IT also let's you keep the weight up between your shoulders, more like a hind quarter, then all down in bottom of the bag.

Glad you found something that works for you. I rarely ruck with weights over 60 lbs., generally between 40-50 so capacity hasn't been an issue at all for me.

I want to keep up on the weighted walks I was doing with my dog prior to elk season but I don't want to add unnecessary wear and tear on my hunting pack. So my question is, do you guys use plate carriers similar to mil style or the link below?

Or do you opt for a dedicated weight vest similar to:

https://www.goruck.com/products/training-weight-vest or https://www.511tactical.com/tactec-...1iX7qtz2JwyJMRzaFk-9MWdOKP8uFvOuMiYaJWi0NDXc5

Or something even more basic like this?

thanks for he help! too many options for basically the same goal...
Other than hauling out the first load, I do not use my hunting pack for hauling meat. So, to answer your question, I have TWO meat hauling frame packs. The frame packs are identical. The primary one is for hauling meat in the back country. The secondary one is for training. This approach puts zero wear on my hunting pack and gets my body used to hauling heavy loads with the frame pack.

Two hunting packs. Primary for hunting. Secondary for backup.

Like other posts, I use an older Osprey pack for rucking/pre season workouts. I have access to weighted vests at work and they are not the same as a pack, they distribute the weight front and back and it does not translate the same as a pack with a hip belt. I do have a ruck pack/plate carrier (GoRuck) I use throughout the year and it does work well for general workouts. I add the hip belt before season but still prefer the Osprey a month out before hunting season. It just rides different and translates the best to mountain hunting. That said, if you are going up and down super steep stuff for long treks during your season, a plate carrier pack would work well. They are expensive, but they will last a long long time if used year round, much longer than any other pack system. My Osprey is old and still works fine but the foam in the straps is pretty flat/stiff now.

Tallest "mountain" in my state is 3500'...I have to use weight and humidity to simulate altitude. 70lb ruck with 90 degrees and 80% humidity is all kinds of fun. LOL

I have the V Force weighted vest, but all of the weight is supported by your traps and I find it gets uncomfortable after a while. It’s great for short gym workouts but depending on how long your walks are going to be I would just use your pack or invest in a second pack. Crap does happen and having a spare pack is a nice backup.
