Rough Winter for Mule Deer ID/Wy/Ut

I don't know much about the rest of the state but I drove through Colorado's North Park about two weeks ago.

The snow was about as deep as I have seen up there. Most of the sage was buried, a few draws where it is especially tall were still partially exposed. The willows were largely snowed in as well.

Fortunately, many of the deer and antelope migrate out of that area but I'm not sure if they are able to walk to better conditions this year. The previously posted map shows less snow up towards Saratoga.

The elk were out in the open, seemingly doing alright.

I've been curious myself about how the deer are doing over in Colorado. Was going to archery hunt this year (Assuming I drew, which I easily should)

Here's the other issue nobody wants to talk about. Big game is waaaaaaay easier to poach in the winter, especially a hard winter. This buck was poached on a friend's property recently and left to waste. Happens in the area every winter and we never hear about anybody getting busted for it.

Add trophy poaching to the hard winters and it's easy to see the direction that some areas are headed.

Absolutely makes me sick!!

I was out Sunday stretching my legs in between Emmett and Indian Valley. We were damn lucky with our winter conditions. It started out pretty rough but the south and west slopes are melted off really well. The deer that I seen were in great shape. Found a few that had died over the winter, but very well could have been predation. It sounds like south of here is not faring so well.

We just got hit again hard in NE Wyoming. The deer were just starting to make a rebound it seemed like too.

Went up through some winter range today in SE Idaho along the Wyoming border. Overall the deer look pretty good, the ones I saw at least. Snow wasn’t terribly deep and they had access to sagebrush/shrubs. Took a few photos. Saw about 100 deer.
