I was in Vegas last weekend to watch the UFC fights and on Monday night my left shoulder started to hurt a lot! By the end of the night I could not raise my left arm without some serious pain. Now I admit the wife and I had a great time at some clubs on Friday and Saturday after the fights but nothing crazy and we are at a loss at what caused the injury.

A week later I can use my arms with no issues unless I raise it straight out in front or to the side at should height or higher. Its been a week and everyday it has gotten better so I tried to shoot my bow tonight. I couldn't even raise it up to a shooting position without pain.( Right-handed)

Doing some searches on the net it sounds like I have a Rotator cuff injury. The symptoms all fit - Pain and weakness in my shoulder when reaching overhead (like putting on clothes or washing my hair) loss of range of motion and a general inclination not keep my shoulder inactive.

I plan on seeing my family Dr tommrow to get checked out.

For the guys who have had shoulder problems what was your recovery time frame? Up until this injury I shot at least 5 days a week plus weight training 2 days on and 1 day off rotation and cardio with my pack. I was able to work out my back and biceps last night without any problems and have been out on nightly jogs with no pack but anytime I lift my left arm above shoulder level I get pain.

Is my bow season in jeopardy?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if it is indeed your rotater cuff, and it is actually torn or damaged in some way your recovery will likely be around 6 months. If you just somehow stretched or strained the cuff then you may be fine in a few weeks.

I ripped my rotater cuff in a tournament about 12 years ago or so and it took a bout 8 months after surgery to get back to normal. If you have to go to physical therapy do exactly what they say. If you permenantly mess up the cuff by not letting it heal right then there is a chance you may not ever be able to shoot your bow again. Not trying to scare ya, but its the truth, its a serious problem that needs definitie medical care and therapy.

Hope thats not what it is!

sounds like bicep tendonitis to me. Could be some agravation or tearing of the labrum as well. ICE, ICE, ICE. Then rest. Ibuprofen. after a week of that, find the best sports medicine physical therapist you can and you might avoid surgery. I did.
