Super helpful, thank you so much! This is the type of more Roosevelt specific info that I have been missing. The internet and books and magazines are so full of RM elk info. Your info is much more useful, specific to the terrain of western WA/OR and likely also Roosevelt species specific.
Quick question; what's RMZ line?
I am by no means a proficient blacktail deer hunter yet either, but this does sound a little bit more like I'd hunt for those than what I read (or have done) for rm elk. The one difference between my blacktail hunting and your telling is that while I TRY to find the deer and then set up a good shooting position at first and last light I have actually never shot a deer from those spots even after locating tons of fresh sign. All my success has been from 11am through 4pm while walking around in the somewhat thinner older reproduction areas / older but not old growths.
Is that also a likely scenario for elk? Or is it truly first/last light or bust?
