Thought I’d share another stock project. I wanted to significantly up my shooting this year and focus on practice and not gear, especially taking all summer to make custom carbon fiber stocks like I have the last few years. So to accomplish this, I bought more gear…

There was a Howa 1500 in 6 cm at my LGS that had stayed on the used shelf for over two years just staring at me every time I went in. So for a bargain of $300 I finally broke and bought it. Then a used rokstok from the classifieds for a great deal as it was a left handed R700 SA. To marry the two, I picked up a universal mini chassis from Grayboe, inlet for the Howa.

I didn’t take a ton of pictures and document everything, but the process was simple:
  • Trim the mini chassis to reduce weight and lessen the amount of carbon I have to take out of the stock
  • layout where the mini chassis will land based on trigger reach - a touch longer than the standard rokstok felt more comfortable, so I ended up at around 1.8”
  • measure the mini chassis with calipers and use a router to carefully cut a big rectangle in the stock.
  • Bond it in with MarineTex.
  • Drill through the thicker sections of the mini chassis and epoxy in carbon fiber rods to serve as cross bolts. I used 4 on this one, two 5mm rods and two larger tubes.
  • Fill the gaps and previous R700 inletting with either MarineTex, epoxy, or epoxy putty and sand smooth.
  • I also discovered the hard way that the Howa models only come from Grayboe with the long, tactical-style lever so I cut it down to even with the trigger guard and checkered for grip.
  • Then wet sand to 400 and my first sponge paint job with some basic krylon followed by a few coats of flat clear.

Wow, nice work! What does the finished stock and bottom metal weigh now?

I’ll have to double check, but I believe it’s around 40-41 oz. Heavy, but when researching I saw someone quote a tikka rokstock with flush cups, rail, and factory bottom metal at 38 oz, so I’m not far off.

Really pretty paint job.
And from the photos you done real nice with that minichassis and carbon.
Mucho Bonito
