Rokstok Lite

I had something similar to the old “weatherproof” ruger m77 in mind.

Basically to make a long story short, I’m trying to decide between sourcing my own laminate blank, vs ordering a rs lite later in the year.
gotcha.
I don't typically use laminate simply because at the cost of a custom stock, solid wood is the look people typically want.

I've had a ton of questions on this stock so I'll post more pics and info.

it's curly Maple dyed black with a poly finish.

I was going for a ghost flame look where the curly grain was subtle but popped in sunlight.

Also of note:
earlier I said the forend was 1" shorter than the Rokstok. I checked and actually cut it off again at the Lite length so I could get a finger between the stock and suppressor. 14.5" barrel/OG 6.5

it has a slight purple hue up close in bright sun but looks black otherwise.

For a "let's see what happens" blem stock, it came out better than I expected.

I’ll be taking that in a couple of weeks.

Any specific reason you used a poly instead of your penetrating finish?

Also how come dye over stain?

just poly is less work if it didn't work out.

dye just to try black. my understanding is dye is a more vivid color over stain in most colors.

black sanded back makes a cool accent.

I'll be the dissenter and say that I do not like it 😂 I couldn't bring myself to hide the figure in curly Maple

Edit: I guess as far as a black stock goes, you can't get better than that. But I just wouldn't do that to a piece of curly maple

Ahh gotcha. Yea dyes will definitely be better for that and especially maple. I was going to recommend a conditioner if you go the staining route. Maple tends to get really blotchy. The dye doesn’t seem to do that.

Did you dye earlier in the sanding process - around 120 or after it was fully finish sanded? Looks like it got plenty of penetration, I’m just curious.

Black stained wood is my favorite look (cabinetry) but I never would’ve thought of it for a stock. Looks really freaking good. Looking forward to seeing some more pictures of it in different lighting

it took me a while to commit...and I can sand it right off if I hated it.

iirc, I took it to 600, raised the grain, 600 again and applied the dye with alcohol. Alcohol seems to pull it in deeper.
then polished it back with a used grey scotch pad before the finish.

The dye comes as a powder. it can be mixed with Alcohol, water or alcohol/ water mix.
