Rocky Mountain Goat Alliance

Last summer I emailed the Biologist in charge of the goat unit that RMGA helped open up. At the time I had not heard of RMGA. I had noticed a large population of goats in the Lionhead unit of Gallatin National Forest so I emailed the Bio inquiring why there was not a GMU there. She responded saying some other people had noticed that too, and this start up group(RMGA) was planning a trip to survey the area to confirm a healthy, huntable population of goats. I told her I'd be glad to volunteer to help out. She sent my info to the Founder and Executive Director of RMGA, who promptly emailed me. I responded, telling him I was excited to help out...

Apparently he then realized that I worked for "The Other" boot company based in Bozeman, and never responded to that email or my follow up email. I was disappointed that a non-profit "Alliance" would be exclusive, and reject volunteer help because someone worked for their day job's competition.

I think it's a much needed group and I'm all for what they stand for as far as conservation goes, but that left a bad taste in my mouth, and obviously my help and my membership were not welcome...

Hello Rowndy,

This is Pete Muennich, from the RMGA. I apologize our communication in our early stages was poor. Truth be told, that survey was conducted by my roommates and I. The Hebgen survey was nothing like the ones we now host. Not sure who you are or who you work for, but I can guarantee you your place of employment has nothing to do with your eligibility for Goat Alliance outings. Hope you can put this behind you and understand there was certainly nothing personal about a dropped email chain. We would love to have you as a member or volunteer in the future! Please call me with any further comments. Thanks! 406-551-5104.

No matter what boot you guys have on your feet, I would like to say this. My buddy drew a goat tag for the Gallatin range in 2010. We saw good health herds of goats and most of the billies were either a shooter or close to being a shooter. We were even lucky enough to see a few sheep, and one great bull. O ya and the wolves were deffinatly present there as well. Even though my buddy drew the tag, I considered my self lucky to be on the hunt and to be up in goat country.

I didn't even know there was a Goat organization, but if you guys are out there helping watch over ther herds, and help take care of them thankyou very much. One day I will pull that tag and I will be back up on the same ridge that almost killed us.
