Roads in the West

Yes I
There’s not a whole lot of roads up high in any national forest or BLM. So any information you get on a public forum is really gonna narrow the scope. And just because you’re asking a question doesn’t mean there isn’t 300 other people reading the answers.

I will try to answer your question in general though. Check with the local management agency and use something like on X maps to be sure of what’s private property or closed for the season, etc. As far as road conditions go if it’s an old mining road, you might want a high clearance vehicle with some skid plates if it’s a logging road you’re probably fine to take a Prius down it unless weather hits.
Yes I have a high clearance real SUV Toyota 4Runner. I’ve gotten up to 10k in the Pecos, New Mexico. Backpacked the rest of the way up. Thanks.

This is a type of spot burning information that isn’t allowed. You’re just asking about parking spots to day hunt from but that bread crumb leads to someone’s hunting spot or ten more trucks trying to get that spot.

OK so now I'm thoroughly confused. I respect the moderators so took the time to look through the entire forum rules. This is what it says about specific units:

  1. Posting specific unit numbers, while not against the rules for even for members in good standing, is still sometimes frowned upon by members depending upon the context of the post. A good rule of thumb to follow when discussing specifics of a unit is to ask for Private Messages or share information in private messages. While posting specific unit numbers is frowned upon, posting specific drainages or trailheads are grounds for much worse from the rokslide community lol. Use your common sense, use private messages, etc. we are all in this together and to help each other.

I'm asked only about general road access information for a handicapped person. Not elk info, nor deer info, not basins to hunt, not specific forest service roads, not trailheads, not campsites, not parking areas & not pulling campers. Just road access only. I cannot comprehend how you think my post failed to meet forum rules, while the others were apparently fine? The thread was not started by me. The title specifically had three unit numbers listed on there for four years until you changed it yesterday. You did not remove the unit number from my post #14, so I had the courtesy to do it myself, despite me wondering how "the context of the post" did not comply with rule #4. While the first 13 were not mentioned. I don't mention any of this to be a smart aleck., just clarification for future posts.

This thread, and hundreds of others, ask for "any info" about specific units. No PM's requested:

What am I missing here? I just don't get it. I've got serious heart failure w/defibrillator implanted Sept. 26th, costing me this past elk season. An EF30 plus another ablation December 10th. I have handicapped hunting eligibility & permits in both Indiana & Illinois. Exactly what kind of "context" is acceptable?

am familiar with the mid & low country but not the high

You don’t have to go high to find elk, it’s just that iconic high country hunt that plasters the magazines and you tube. If you are familiar with that country, I’m sure you’re aware of some resident herds that are in that sage aspen ecotone.

I have heart failure and cannot backpack much due to shoulder strap pressure on my defibrillator.

Just curious if you have thought about how you will pack an elk out if you put one down?

I know. I just enjoy it more up high and like to hunt at timberline when possible so I can glass mornings. I shot my NM Pecos bull at 10,800'. Cooler to give me time to get the meat out. That was my favorite ever elk hunt. But these days if I'd have to pack up more than a mile I doubt I could do that. I spend many days advance scouting for wallow pods to set up over. Either high or mid level.

Once I draw the tag, my prep will begin. I've been securing horses for the last 20 years, by PM's in advance, then when I get to the area I drive to the smallest nearby towns and talk to locals. Often a tiny post office is best. They know everyone. Bigger towns rarely work for this. I usually ID 5 or more and get them in preferential order for when I get a bull down. I have actually gotten lucky on recent NM & NV hunts where they dropped 1/4 mile from my vehicle. I was able to backpack that distance myself.

Sorry about your heart condition, I missed that earlier. Look into a handicap exemption (forget the actual name of it), it might help you out.

Moderation is done with some discretion so we can follow the spirit of the rules not the letter. Those rules were posted a month before this thread therefore it was treated with a different perspective. Yes we want conversation on here without spot burning that’s why I responded. My intent was to give an explanation of the issue so that there was an example for others to follow. I also answered you without giving away anything. Often we see a thread like this that is borderline then some yahoo replies with camp coordinates so getting out in front of something might piss off a few people but it saves an area from being blown up.
