Ripped Boot Leather

Found out my Schnees Beartooths finally have a leak today. The “tears” in the leather happened a while ago, and a year or two later had water get in for the first time. Must have got hung up on some old barbed wire or something. What would you recommend to seal this up? Shoe Goo, Gear Aid…something else?

I’d leather condition and then use the ShoeGoo or Gear Aid on top. Whichever applies nicer. ShoeGoo can get sloppy. Maybe use an old tooth brush to thin it around.

Then I would test it with water to see if that worked.

Last thing (shouldn’t tell ya this), but Schnees did have a big 40% off sale on the new version of those boots and others.

I would NOT condition first, as that may prevent glue from sticking. I would start by trying Gear Aid or a leather/fabric glue. I'm not sure those will hold up to substantial abuse, but they would be my first try. If that doesn't hold up, I would just use epoxy the next time and press the leather together to close up the tear

Don’t condition them. If anything scrub with soapy water to get off residual conditioner and let dry and then use the gear aid aqualseal sr. That stuff is amazing.

Agree with DON'T treat the leather first. I've used the Aqua Seal and like it, but definitely adheres better when boots are at that stage where any previous treatment is worn off.

I'd start off with just a little goo and try to work it in with toothpick or paper clip tip. Then a seal/spackle layer over top. Won't be pretty. Won't last forever. But it will last long enough to make it worth your while.
