Rifle for 6 year old nephew?

Cheap ar in .223 with a collapsible stock would work. Minimal recoil, not a lot of weight out front and he can grow with it. My son is 13, on the small size and still struggles with a full size rifle. FInally kind of growing into it.

For sure listen to this^^^^^^^

I started my son (now 5.5 years old) with a S&W 15-22 with a red dot on it last year. He learned to shoot with a gun that was able to be set with a proper length of pull and the red dot is much easier to teach with than a scope (try explaining eye relief to a 4 year old). The red dot allowed me to have him focus on the more important aspects. One less thing to worry about. This year I moved him up and let him start shooting an AR-15 that I set up identically to the 15-22. The move was seamless. He can switch back and forth with no issues at all. There is a lot to be said for being able to adjust the length of pull and for the benefits of a red dot. I can tell you that I have no idea why anyone would start their kid with anything other than an AR-15 platform. But to each their own.

I agree on the AR platform. The adjustable lop is great and they are ambidextrous for the most part. My son is right handed left eye dominant and we settled on the AR as the best fit for him.

Thanks guys, I ended up getting him a ruger american 223. I was almost going to pick him up an AR but decided on the ruger american. I am going to pick up an AR for myself here pretty soon so maybe I will just put the ruger in the safe for now and let him shoot the AR.

I was finally able to get out and start breaking in my nephews rifle. I gotta say for a rifle at this price point I'm pretty dang impressed! I had a Simmons scope in the closet that I put on but I think I'll pull it off and put something different on there for him. It's basically a 3-12 but anything above about 6 or 7 power the thing is just completely blurry. Anyway after getting the gun on paper I moved back and started seeing what it could do. I was shooting some cheap hornady fmj ammo. Here's my last 10 shots before the rain and hail started coming down pretty good.View attachment 36810
