Local smith built me 300 wsm off defiance classic last year. Noticed the past month it was shooting weird, odd brass growth and the like. Last week went to the range and noticed my brake was turned, when turning it back my barrel was loose.

Got pissed bought vise and SAC wrench, go no gauges and fixed it myself.

Talk about pissing you off two weeks before uou leads for a month.

A long time ago I got annoyed by a poor performing barrel. I sent the rifle off to a smith to rebarrel it. It was there the better part of a year by the time he started working on it. He told me the barrel was on hand tight 🤦.

My dad had a rifle built by the legendary Speedy Gonzales that had a hand tightened barrel.

I imagine it’s hard to pay attention to detail when your phone is ringing off the hook from people asking for a status update. Haha

I've definitely had a few cases of bad work from a few gunsmiths. Last couple of guns I've had Kampfeld Customs do the work and it's been a breathe of fresh air. It's great when everything goes smooth and comes out just right.

Sorry for your headache it sucks for sure

A friend of mine spun his barrel loose on a custom rifle taking off his suppressor....not carbon locked, either. He was just test fitting, measuring, weighing, etc right when he got the rifle back. Finger tight would be generous for the torque specs.
