so i posted awhile ago about deciding to either rebuild my savage 11 with a bigger barrel and stock to accept my suppressor (in jail) or buying a new rifle. i've decided to buy a new rifle. some of the pre-requisites in no order for me were:

  1. 18" barrel maybe a 20" if its the right gun (suppressor is right at 7")
  2. .308
  3. i'd like an adjustable comb
  4. bolt-action
  5. less than $700
  6. light weight (sub 8.5lbs)
  7. threaded
so far i've narrowed it down to two candidates (that i've actually held)

Savage 110 tactical

Ruger american hunter (relatively new model)
https://ruger.com/products/americanRifleHunter/specSheets/26993.html

primary use is white tail hunting in arkansas (for hogs i'll use my .300 BO) but may also go out west after points build up.

I would be open to more suggestions or your opinions on the two

i dont believe the tikka has an adjustable comb?

i never shot an adjustable comb till recently and realized that my face/cheek/eye height is not well suited for most standard stocks.

this could all be avoided with adding some aftermarket accessory obviously but having it built-in would be a plus.

Not dumping money into a Savage or Ruger American is a plus....

Both of those guns go boom, however the Ruger doesn’t make your weight, and the Savage is a compromise on about every point. As above a Tikka CTR used to new on sale is a far superior action/trigger/barrel with a very usable stock.

I love my CTR for the action, the trigger, and the accuracy. That said, I'm against hanging mags on any hunting rifle. Just my opinion of course, but if you are doing a lot of spot and stalk, that mag is going to annoy you endlessly. You might consider a Bergara Ridge--and if 22" turns out to be too long after you have your can, you can easily have it cut and threaded shorter.

Have you looked at rem 700 sps tactical. There’s a sniper instructor that I use to train with that had one cut down to 16” and threaded before he left for sniper school in AZ said it was the best pre school decision he made much easier to hide.

99.9% of the hunting use will either be 20' off the ground in a stand or in a box stand on the ground.

the .1% would be if i cashed in my Colorado points within the next decade (currently at 3)

Reviving this thread for a couple reasons:

1. I was on tikkas website recently and noticed they had an adjustable (stock) CTR. They have 3 .308 options. One is a left handed 20” and the other two are right handed both in 24” (different triggers). A) why can’t I find these for sale online anywhere and B) why not right handed 20”? (There is a 6.5 right handed with a 20” I may lean towards

2. I handled the savage 110 tactical and Ruger American hunter again and they were fine but I made the mistake of handling a Bergara HMR. It was heavy but felt so good cycling and the feel of the stock. Why can’t they make this rifle a pound or two lighter?? I guess I could go with the other Bergara models and add a cheek piece. I don’t know why the new Wilderness HMR model didn’t shave any pounds off. When a name like wilderness implies backpacking.

3. my suppressor stamp came in! So the rifle search has amped up. Any other options I should be looking at? I’ve revised my criteria to:

18-20”
.308 or 6.5
$1000 or less
9lbs or less
Prefer threaded barrel
Prefer adjustable cheek piece but like I said I guess I could go with a Velcro style add-on

adjustable combs are nice but i've found more use for my standard stocks with a comb pad. either the triad tactical or bradley adjustable work great. i prefer the triad for the extra storage and lower cost. bradley is mighty proud of the kydex.

also, sounds like tikka has some threaded barrels coming out in the non ctr models soon. there was a thread about it on here a couple weeks back.
