Colorado 2nd rifle mule deer - which one do you take when your max range is 350 yards:

-7mm mag, 155gr Terminal Ascent
-.270 Win, 130gr Core Lokt

Both shoot inside 1 MOA.

7mag is a lights-out shooter with the TA round.

The 270 is a pound lighter, seems to hate all premium ammo, and holds high sentimental value.

Man, I'm just not a 270 fan. I'll get flamed for this but it just doesn't trip my trigger. Nor does rem core lokts.

Having said that, they both shoot the same and 350 is not a hard stretch for either rifle. I'd take the 270 to save a pound and build on the sentimental value of the rifle.

Those 155 TA's are money but under 400 on a deer the 130 Remington's will do the job.

One question, do they both shoot similar groups out to say 400? Those results may give you something to consider.

Also, I imagine the 270 barrel is at least 2 inches shorter than your 7 rem, so will be less prone to snag in brush

Either will work well. If God didn’t intend the 7 mag to be the perfect mule deer round, he wouldn’t have allowed it to kill so darn good.

When the biggest deer of your life turns to take off and isn’t at a great angle, you’ll be glad to have the xtra Kapow!

Either, my .270 absolutely crushes with the 130 SST if you haven't tried that yet.

Que all the “ideal conditionals a 223 drops T-Rex” people. Despite what is cool to say more displacement will bail you out on a marginal shot sometimes. If it were me and I was going to track a 200” mule deer that I had shot on a less than ideal angle I would much rather it got hit by the terminally superior round. And no I’m not letting a 200 get away because it’s a bad angle. Sometimes perfect shot placement means shooting him in the last rib when that’s all you can see. And I’ve got a pile of big racks that prove 7s and 30s get it done. If you shoot them both equally well I would run the 7mm.

If your max range is 350, it doesn't matter. Take whichever one is lighter, easier to pack, or calls to you when you Crack the safe

On the chance that you are more comfortable with the .270 (less recoil, less blast), I would say take it. Otherwise, it doesn't much matter.
