Was curious what everyone is using for rifle cases, hard sided ones to be exact.

I am going to need to purchase two hard sided rifle cases for traveling (riding in back of truck, or airplane). I was looking at SKB and pelican, but was not sure if there is something else out there.

Thanks,

Have couple aluminum . one is a bear claw i believe, not sure if still made, but is a tank. Plenty tough but plenty heavy. Went through this several years ago and found wide range of quality. Some of the lighter ones are pure junk. Pelican is good but also very heavy. Lots of trade offs. Good luck finding one that is just right

I think the best ones for protecting your firearms are going to be aluminum and for flying that's the ONLY way to "fly" .... (ha ha)

I will look for some aluminum ones. Maybe look for a local fabricator in the bozeman area

stand corrected : bear track cases- rolling hills,wy . not sure what happened to them but a great case if you can find one. mine is a double rifle and weighs in excess of 25 pounds am sure

GKPrice, let me know if you remember. Right now I am going to contact some local welder/ fabricator shops and see what they would charge to build one.

Bear Track Cases was bought by Freedom Arms Co. of Freedom Wyoming back in 2001. They just took them off their web site because
they are so backed up on their revolver production( I just got a new revolver that was on order for 14 months) , they had to focus on the
revolver production!
Also, the new airline rules on baggage weights means that a person has to use as light a case as possible.

I am aware of all this because I started Bear Track Cases back in 1997, and sold it to Freedom because it was not practical to do from
Alaska.

They are the best aluminum case ever made, but of course I am a little biased!!!!

Not biased sir, just correct. Good to hear from you . My case served me well many years chasing prairie dogs. Would be willing to sell it but know the shipping would be costly. Thanks again

I have the SKB iseries cases for bow and rifle. Very well built cases IMO. All the Pelican equipment I have seen is very well done as well.

just for the sake of discussion, i doubt you can get one built that will be light enough. the cost may not turn you off but weight may.

we had a food box built of aluminum for float trips and it was heavier than wood. it is a nice box but weighs a lot. perhaps your fabricator can do better than ours but you should talk about it with him.

i have about every brand of rifle case you can name except tuffpak but it is hard to pick which is best.

a side note- i seen a busted plastic case last year at the super shoot. it was one of the real heavy thick plastic ones. i did not check the name it just looked like a skb or a pelican. it had a 4 inch hole in one corner. it was in a trash can and i mentioned it to a bud who promptly grabbed it and took it home. he says he fixed it with epoxy, but i have not seen it yet. it took a whale of a hit to make that hole, no matter the brand name. i have not a clue what aluminum would look like after the same hit.

on two occasions i have had rifles shipped to me that had a barrel sticking out the end of the case. get a case that wont fail. luck -ray
