Rifle carry system

I found the slick sling a bit “busy” for my taste.

What is it that’s so bad about the exo system? I like that the bottom stays on when you rest the butt of the rifle. The top clip is nice and adjustable. It is secured a lot better than many. I used the SG one a ton and while nice, could get a bit floppy. I was able to pack a deer out solo with rifle right on the frame/near my body as Exo intended. Do people really just hate the clip or what am I missing?
I watched the install video half a dozen times but I cannot reach the clip. Maybe it’s a shoulder mobility issue? I essentially have to put the rifle on with the pack off and vice versa. Slik sling is functional at least for me, though not ideal…

I agree the EXO sling system takes shoulder flexibility. I can not reach back far enough to release the upper rifle retaining strap. I modified my old Kifaru strap / rifle carry system and it works very well on my EXO pack.

No problem, it wasn't my idea, someone on here did it and I copied it, works well for me. I have the Teratorn so when not actively hunting I carry the rifle on my pack strapped under the wing.
All good I normally have my rifle strapped in or over my shoulder.. Really liked the original KUIU top strap system guess I will have to call them & see if they still have them

I have an EXO K4, I use both the EXO and Kifaru gun bearer.
If I am packing in somewhere, I use the EXO so it's out of the way. When I am hunting, I have it in the Kifaru.
I like them both, Kifaru more than the EXO.

Its funny I like the EXO top but not so much the bottom.
The bottom drives me insane. Elastic is way too tight, my manners PH is an extremely tight fit. and the top is a pain to get undone with the pack on. I think im going to modify mine with the paracord and QD mentioned above and see of i can snip the elastic on the bottom.

I like the top but I have real good shoulder mobility.

Think I may have my wife sew a bottom that is specifically made for the Rokstock. Actually thinking about it she has a little sewing business, mostly selling stuff at farmers markets etc. I wonder if there would be a market for a Rockstok optimized bottom stock holder. May have to play with that this weekend.

This is great. I tried to convince the Slik Sling guy to make a version like this but he was just about to release his V2 which I don't love.

I run an Exo K4 and their rifle carrier option is surprisingly bad. Everything else they make is so well tested and integrated. I think they just made it to shut people up and give them something, while they are disciples of the strap-it-to-the-pack ethos.

I wish someone would make a version with QD cups top and bottom that you could use to keep your rifle in front of you cross-body (sort of like the tactical AR slings).
I have my own diy system that attaches to the pack that allows this carry. Kinda like a Vickers sling cut in half and attached to the pack shoulder straps

I used the V1 Slik Sling for handful of years and worked real well. I lost the bottom web cradle this fall - web just slipped thru the ladder buckle I guess. Anyway this is what I have come up with to give a try - so far passed the basement try it out test.

Still the simple old original Slik strap for the top. For the bottom I bought an FHF Dump Pouch

Slid it on the bottom part of the shoulder harness strap via the molle slots. When not in use it buckles up to tidy bundle out of the way:

In use it's an easy target in/out with the rifle butt and seems to hang comfortably

We'll see how it works in the wilds. Wondering if the extra weight on that shoulder strap will bug me...it rests snug against the waist belt so hoping that will bear the weight...? If it doesn't work out still a handy pouch...to dump stuff in. 😉

Ooh I like that idea of using the FHF dump pouch on the bottom. I've been doing the same with the Slik upper but using a Kifaru gun bearer lower and I'm always nervous if its in there well in the dark or after climbing over stuff.

I didn't mind the KUIU system on the lone rifle hunt I used it on. I don't know how hard it would be to adapt to other packs though. You can zoom in and kind of see it. QR on top. Cinches down pretty well. Sorry only pic I have of it in action.

Sorry, found another....packout.jpg

It comes set up so the pouch velcros on/off the molle mount. With the rifle in it I could hear some velcros giving way so gave it a quick jostle and it will pop right off the velcro. I'm going to hand sew thru the velcro so the pouch is permanent on the molle mount.

I think it would work well mounted in center of pack frame as well to center up the weight of the rifle for longer approaches, hiking into camp, etc. It bundles up to nothing not in use.
