Reworking 700 classic

I have what I believe is 700 classic built in 1989 375 HH. It shoots ok but not stellar.

Should I rebarrel it to 375 hh with a 22 inch barrel

or should I step down to a big 33?

Moose is on the menu in 2023 so the gun might be going with me then.

What ammo are you shooting? If you handload, have you fed it 71ish grs of rl15 yet? That seems to be the magic.

375 h&h is pretty awesome, so is a 9.3x62 if you go with a rebarrel , kinda over looked caliber but it’s really legit on medium to heavy dangerous stuff to IMO

You're going to hunt moose, they are huge. For your purposes, what is minute of moose with respect to accuracy? When it shoots OK but not stellar what context is that?

It shoots RL 15 and 250 TTSX right about 1.5 moa.

I thought about a shorter barrel with a good brake and a good stock.

Id like to be able to get out to 400 yards with it any further ill shoot my 300 prc.

MY prc and my 300 wsm both shoot 1/2 moa and carry it to 400 where it ( I ) open up a bit. I don't even care if its 1.5 moa as much as a short handier barrel.

Debating if I should leave it alone and mess with the cheap 700 adl I bought.

I would take the accuracy you have, put it in the bank, and go shoot a moose with it. Just trying to help promote discussion here... What game animals would you shoot with a 375 H&H at 400 yards? To my eyes doing anything with that gun is a solution in need of a problem.

Its a blast too shoot very mild mannered for what it brings to the table. I have shot a bunch of whitetails with it, furthest at just a hair under 300 yards. What game animals would you shoot with a 30-06 at 400 yards?

Cheapest route is to bed the stock you have and cut the existing barrel down to 22". Remove the pressure pad in the forearm that Remington has in there, and float the barrel. Then see how it shoots. I would suspect this will get you closer to if not below 1 MOA. That said, 1.5moa will meet your needs as is for big game out to 400.

If it were mine, I would do the above in stages. Bed the stock, and remove the pressure pad. Shoot and see. If it looked better, chop the barrel and recrown.

However, I don't shoot factory Remington monte carlo stocks very well, so I'd swap it for a CDL or classic style synthetic.

If it's a classic it doesn't have a mc stock. I have one in 35 Whelan but it shoots moa even with factory. Nice looking rifles imo!

that’s a good reason! I keep meaning to build a .375 for myself.

For animals I would shoot at 400 yds with an '06, regardless of the caliber or cartridge, I'd be looking at bullet style, bullet weight and velocity for expansion at the longer ranges I may take a shot at. A 300 WM with a 180 gr cup and core bullet (interlock, corelokt, etc) at 2960 fps mv is going basically the same speed at 400 yds as an '06 shooting a 200 gr AccuBond at 2650 fps mv.

As for the 375 H&H, I can see the fun in stretching the range with higher BC bullets. My questions/comments were more about the accuracy as it sits is not bad for a big bore and moose being such a large target and typically not engaged at 400 yards, so it would be a moot point on the last nth degree of accuracy.

But I would go after the low hanging fruit, as has been said such as bedding, possibly cut the existing barrel down and then see where you are at.
