I bought my oldest son a Granite Gear Nimbus Core pack over 10 years ago and recently found it in a corner of our basement...never used. I pulled it out and the longer I looked at the pack the more I realized why I bought it. It was a unique pack. It weighs about 3.5 lbs and what I've read is was rated to carry up to 50 lbs. My son has a couple of packs now including an Exo, so he isn't going to use it. The initial hurdle to keeping it for me was the waist belt size. I bought a medium belt for him but when I got on the Granite Gear website I was excited to figure out that they still sell a replacement belt and it was on clearance for $20. Got my XL replacement belt this week. The Nimbus Core didn't come with any side pockets on the hip belt, so I have an order in for two from Initial Ascent, which should fit nicely. I also have a Stone Glacier Load Cell bag that should work perfectly to carry clothes and gear in the center of the pack.

I won't use it to haul meat but I think it will be a great pack for scouting and camping trips. I do have a small, portable game feeder that is awkward to carry with my other packs, but I'm going to pull it out tomorrow and see if I can drop the feeder into the middle of it. It isn't much bigger than a bear canister. If it works, it will great for spring bear.

Here is an old review on the pack with pictures, for those interested. It's been fun to have a small project to play around with.

Before you take it out on a serious trip, load it up with 40-50 lbs and wear it around for an hour. The foam in the old shoulder straps might be compressed or stiff after sitting for a decade. If they feel uncomfortable, you might want to look at adding some strap padding or replacing the straps, though that's a more involved project. But from what you've described, it sounds like the pack is in great shape.

Those packs share a lot of the same technology as the Granite Gear Tactical CHIEF packs which was probably one of the more comfortable military issued packs. I believe that has a maple core laminated wood frame with pivoting hipbelt and shoulder straps. As long as the condition is still good, and from your description, it sounds that way, it should work great for what your looking for.
