I have a restricted weapon hunt in Utah this year and just wondering what everyone’s favorite sight is to use on muzzleloaders or rifles? Regular iron sights? Peep sights? Or ladder sights? Looking at Williams, Skinner, and Lyman but just curious what other guys prefer?

I like a peep but keep in mind, it is almost impossible to see through at extremely low light. On my last two elk hunts, I had to unscrew the peep and just use the ring starting at about 15 minutes before last light. I use the Williams.

I’m a big fan of the vintage steel Redfield and Lyman receiver sights. Not as enthusiastic about the more modern aluminum sights from Williams, but I have them on a few rifles and they work just fine.

Here’s a Redfield I just finished putting on a T3X Drover in .308. Still messing with the overall combo, but it’s showing some promise.

I’d contact @longrangelead and let him set the rifle up for you. He has setup two rifles for me with different aperture sights.

I prefer an aperture sight. And screw the aperture insert out and throw it away. I’m not shooting past 300 with irons on game and would rather have the light than the small amount of added precision to be gained.

I also like the long discontinued Sourdough front that Redfield used to make. Anything with a square top, a plain black post I’ll take before a bead.

I ended up putting the Williams peep on my muzzleloader which I liked at the range. Never had an opportunity to use it on a deer this year. My wife ended up shooting a buck on the rifle hunt with the stock iron sights that came on the old M70’s. I think next year I’ll also put a peep sight on the rifles. Those restricted weapon hunts are a lot of fun, it seems to put the sport and challenge back into hunting which we really enjoyed.

I agree. We used an old Winchester model 70 in .270 with Williams peep. We were lucky to have shots under 200 yd.
My Freind missed a buck opening day with his 35 Remington lever with traditional buckhorns but ended up getting another opportunity at the same deer with my gun the last day. It was tough but we got lucky and enjoyed the heck out of it.
