I recently inherited an older 700 BDL in .308 that has some very nice wood figure. It’s actually the first rifle I used to take deer (3-5, memory is foggy).

The stock got pretty beat up while banging against a stretcher while hauling a hunter who had snapped his leg falling out of a stand +normal use. If possible, I’d like to have someone more skilled than me (literally anyone) remove the existing finish and clean up the dents/scratches.

I’ll probably have it rebarreled at some point as someone (not me) neglected it and allowed rust in the bore (I’m not it the never clean’m camp).

Anyway, who does this sort of work?

No help regarding someone to do the work.

Regarding the stock, as long as the stock isn’t cracked, you would be surprised how straightforward it is to refinish wood if you're at all handy. Depending on the original finish, it can be consuming. YouTube, a couple pieces of sandpaper, and some TruOil (plus patience and time!) would make that stock look as good as new. Watch a couple of YouTube videos to see if you’re up for it first.

If you decide to re-barrel it and have a smith do the stock work, it may be wise to go ahead and have them pillar and glass bed the stock.

Steaming out dented wood can work. I’ve done it before.

Then refinish. I like to use a stripper. I also use a toothbrush with stripper on the checkering.

Then lightly sand and refinish. I’ve also had good results with truoil.
